Owego Little League News

Seventeen baseball teams will compete in the 64th Owego Little League (OLL) season during the last week of April and the months of May and June on Hyde Park’s five diamonds.

Baseball drafts on Monday and Tuesday nights resulted in three Majors teams, five Minor teams, five Modified Tee Ball teams and four Tee-Ball teams. VP Softball Dave York coordinated Girls Softball drafts and will announce teams soon.

Player Agent Eric Hawkins reported 257 registrations from Tee Ball through Teener Baseball and Girls Softball. Of those 257 registrations, 38 were paper sign ups, and 219 were online. For the second year in a row, online registration again proved to be the way to go

National League is now known as Majors and the American League is now called the Minors. These significant name changes now align OLL’s divisions with all the other youth leagues in the Southern Tier.

Baseball VP Chris Rieg notes that the practice schedule is not out yet. Hyde Park fields are unplayable with about four inches of snow pact still on all fields at mid-week. However, coaches will still be calling to inform the parents of what team their player is on.

League President Ken Winters will advise when teams can finally get on the fields to practice, hopefully the week of April 6.

Opening Day 2015 is Saturday, April 25 – one week earlier than the traditional first Saturday of May. Advanced date gives each team and players at least two more games to play.

Remember to check the OLL website at www.eteamz.com/owego for late breaking news and updates from Webmaster Eric Hawkins.

OLL is actively seeking volunteers. OLL depends on volunteers to be successful. Whether you’re a parent or interested member of the community, consider offering your time to help our community’s children.

One of the goals of OLL is to provide a fun, structured environment that will help teach our community’s children to be tomorrow’s leaders.

Volunteer to help managers and coaches; do scorekeeping; operate the scoreboard; play the National Anthem or recite the Little League Pledge; help in the concession stand; organize snacks; help with field maintenance; or empty dugout and field trash containers after games and practices.

Reminder: all volunteers must complete the Little League Volunteer Application.
