Local youth advance in Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest

Pictured are the twelve Rochester champs to include Madison Howey (fourth from right) and Taylor King (second from left).

After winning in their age groups in January at Tioga Central High School, two of the 12 local Free Throw champs are still contenders in the national Knights of Columbus tournament. Madison Howey and Taylor King survived two more rounds of the 25-shot contest and earned the right to compete in Syracuse on March 28.

On Feb. 15, a second round of the Championship was held in Elmira. The Tioga winners went to play against others from the Southern Tier and eight of them came away victorious. Victors include Kendra Katchuk age nine; Arianna Manwaring, age 11; Madison Howey, age 12; Emily Polo Rankin, age 13; Lauren Allen, age 14; and in the boys’ division: Nate Smith, age nine, Taylor King, age 10, and Nick Klossner, age 14.

The Finger Lakes Chapter contest was then held in Rochester on March 8, and both Madison and Taylor scored the best in their divisions. The next level of competition was Saturday in Syracuse, and the winners will play in West Point on April 12.
