Hiawatha District Scouting Exposition and Pinewood Derby planned

The Baden-Powell Council Boy Scouts of America is hosting the Annual Hiawatha District Scouting Exposition and Pinewood Derby on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Oakdale Mall. The Pinewood Derby will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews throughout Broome and Tioga Counties will have displays set up at the Oakdale Mall that will highlight scout skills and activities including: 100 years of Scouting in Endicott, first aid demonstrations, knot tying, plank walk, pioneering, among others.

Local youth involved in Scouting learn the values and skills taught by the Boy Scouts for over 100 years. These skills include stronger relationships with parents and adults, a sense of self-worth, leadership skills, and a strong desire to learn. Scouting prepares our youth to become future upstanding community citizens.

More than 1,300 youth members and more than 626 adult volunteers are registered in the Hiawatha District. There are 55 individual units throughout Broome and Tioga Counties (23 Cub Scout Packs, 28 Boy Scout Troops, and three Venture Crew) and we are working on developing new units in underserved areas.

Hundreds of hours of Community Service Projects were completed last year, including the collection of thousands of pounds of food for use by local charities.
