Readers’ Column for the week of Jan. 24, 2015

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

If people in Owego don’t realize we that we need OPD, we do. I feel a lot safer knowing that they are there and when I call them they are on the spot. Good job OPD!

To use the word anomalous to explain the recent gambling license fiasco is ridiculous. It’s a word that someone had to find in the depths of the dictionary to explain to common people what is really political clout. People having other goals than fairness.

~

This is in regards to the new traffic lights on Court and Main and North and Main. It was the State Department of Transportation not the DMV or the village that made this change. These proposed changes were highly publicized and meetings were held prior to this traffic pattern being changed. People need to stop griping. At least something is trying to be done.

~

More people would have understood what Governor Cuomo was talking about instead of the word anomalous if he had used a common word, dirty politics.

So much attention has been placed on Cal Harris but let’s not forget the Taylor’s. A good family who lost a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter and grandchildren who have grown up without a part of her mother’s side of the family.

~

God I love those republicans. They’re always good for a laugh.

~

I think it’s about time they had the Harris trial again. He’s walked the streets as a free man long enough. He should be behind bars where he belongs. He’s been convicted twice; I hope they get him the third time.

The great dividing Obama gave a lame and inaccurately confused statement of the union message. Instead of saying he heard voters in the November elections and would change course he instead promised a vetoed presidency and more and more taxes and spending. The same policies that have not worked in six years will not work again. But that is to be expected from a Marxist idea log.

Attention: Bikers, trappers, hunters. We lost our beloved dog Buddy on Jan. 18 at approximately 3:30 p.m. He was last seen on the edge of the cornfield behind the Trout Ponds in Newark Valley, the opposite edge of the creek. He caught a scent of something and we never saw him again. His picture is all over Facebook. Since there have been no sightings and we’ve combed the woods to the best of our ability the odds are he didn’t make it in coyote country or even getting caught on his collar. He’s a small robust, light colored with a multi colored collar and not tags. If you come across his remains please contact 239-7713. We will always remain hopeful but better to learn something than never to know anything. In that fading hopelessness, if anyone picked him up to help him, please call. Every day every dog and animal is special, but Buddy the barker was gifted in his personality. Thank you for your help.

In spite of the weather on Friday, Jan. 16, Zion Lutheran Christian school served a delightful pork loin dinner.

Whoever was kind enough to pick up the min pin mixed dog, light haired, wearing a multi colored collar at the Trout Pond on Sunday, Jan. 18 between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m., we appreciate you saving him and we are trying to find him now and are offering a reward for his safe return. Please call 239-7713 or 239-9442; thanking you for helping him and please return him to us.

Could someone please tell me how to get rust stains out of my good white tablecloth?

~

If a local contractor does a shoddy job on your blacktop, state and local government is right there to get him but the village sewer can keep robbing you month after month and state and local government can care less. Welcome to the United States of Communist America.

Once again emperor Obama talks about violent extremists, not Islamic extremists and warns the Europeans not to use a hammer on the extremists. I totally agree with Obama. They should use oozes on the terrorists. We know Obama is an apologist and has just approved two more nuclear reactors for Iran, but when will world leaders declare a war on Muslim terrorists? Maybe when it is too late to do anything.

After reading this column today and the dumb idea of no turn on right on Court Street, I can’t understand why there has never been a left arrow from North Avenue to Talcott Street by Thompson’s when you head towards Newark Valley. It’s ridiculous! I’ve sat at that light three times before I could turn left there. They really should do that as well.

“Stan”, bus 247 sure misses the smiling face and friendly wave of his long ago b-ball opponent in high school’s NV vs. Owego every morning at 8:45 a.m. Best wishes Tom on your retirement.

This is going to be a very hot January and first of February. We have the third trial of Cal Harris coming up, twice convicted and yet allowed another. The second is Bones Jones and cocaine, are those two going to get in the boxing ring with one person? And only one nice day in a hospital for treatment? What the hell! And now there’s a problem with having your cats declawed in New York State. Whose business is that except the owners? Come on you people, wake up!

You can always tell the obamacrat buffoons because they lack facts, intelligence and a coherent message. The Obama message is to give more and more to people who pay out less and less. This bribes the under achievers with freebies with exchange for votes. We need new jobs not more handouts. The republican congress better step up and stop emperor Obama’s Marxist objectives.

I’m an elderly senior citizen and my only income is my social security, and recently I received a notice from social security that wants to tax our social security. I really don’t think that’s right. This is going to affect a lot of the seniors.

This is the old man on the hill who got dubbed by the Town of Owego Highway as a genius. I’d just like to let them know, I’ll take the old man on the hill, I’m 82 years old. As far as intelligence, they don’t want to match me with that. I’ve got common sense and smarts, a lot more than they know. They’re not the sharpest tools in the shed; I’ll guarantee that! Friday, it was snowing and blowing, so they send a truck out in the boondocks with a plow on even. That’s intelligent there.

~

I think it’s a shame when people put things in the cemetery for their loved ones that they’ll never see again and people have to go through them and take them off and do whatever they do with them. It just shows they have no respect for anyone and some day they’ll have to go through that. I just don’t think that’s right.

The 2014 Salvation Army Kettle Drive once again had a very successful year, bringing in $2,391. Thirty-six cheerful volunteers kept the bells ringing for 64 hours! This speaks volumes about the generosity of the community and the shared commitment of helping those who are less fortunate. A huge THANK YOU to all of you who took time out from your hectic schedule to be part of the Kettle Drive, and to Ed Hollenbeck for inviting us to be INSIDE his store.

It is incredible that Mr. May can say that his party’s desire to abolish OPD couldn’t be further from the truth. Mr. May and the trustees elected with him have spoken often and openly about abolishing OPD and about discussing that with county officials.

I have been looking into building a “Tiny House” (this is a small house built on wheels) and placing it on my property. I have made several phone calls and it is my understanding that If the Town does not have zoning prohibiting these houses then it is okay. I have read that these Tiny Houses are considered an RV because they are on wheels and are not taxed. This would make a nice vacation home or full time residence for one or two people. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? There is a lot of land available now that gas drilling has been banned.

As a long-term resident of Berkshire I am appalled by our road conditions. On Jan. 12 we had a small snowstorm that consisted of approximately 3-inches of snow. The snow remained on the roads and is probably still there as ice on Monday, Jan. 19. If you travel anywhere outside of this town, the roads are completely clear after a couple of days. There needs to be salt put on our roads to alleviate the dangerous conditions that are apparent. Where I live I have to travel miles out of my way to get to Maine, Binghamton, or any points east. This is not meant to point fingers, but our highway supervisor has said he saves the town money, but what about its residents? We pay our taxes here in Berkshire and we should have the roads clear so people can come see our “beautiful” town. I am sure this was pointed out by many people during that survey sent out by the town to beautify Berkshire. We need less dangerous and better roads in order for the denizens of Berkshire to get to work so they may pay their taxes. Also better roads for people to travel through our beautiful town, especially those routes that are near Whitney Point, Maine, and other points east. Time to use salt instead of cat litter.
