Take caution as darkness falls earlier

Dear Editor,

As the days are shorter and darkness is longer, I’d like to call attention to the subject of runner/walker and cyclist safety.  Most runners and cyclists take many safety measures, they wear Reflective clothing and headlamps, and obey the rules of the road and respect traffic. However, among these athletes, it is not uncommon to hear stories of impatient drivers, near misses, being forced off the road, and rude comments and “gestures” from impatient drivers.

You may wonder why we don’t simply run and cycle on sidewalks. Well, honestly, over the span of say, a 6-mile run in the Village, most runners find the uneven sidewalks treacherous, especially in the colder weather.

In the winter, many runners are out before the walks are cleared of snow and ice, making it even more dangerous. Also, a cyclist on a sidewalk violates NY DOT vehicle and traffic law 19-176.

In addition, NYDOT traffic safety law places the burden of safety and vigilance on the motor vehicle driver, to avoid colliding with any bicyclist or pedestrian (jogger). (Section 1146).

I understand that there will always be someone that will argue this point, but the next time you have to wait a minute or two to pass a cyclist or a runner, consider they may be trying to stay healthy, clear their head or just enjoy being outdoors in our beautiful little town.

There is room for us all. Please be careful, be aware, slow down.

Sincerely,

Audra Johnson Marks
