Owego Rotary Club awards scholarships

The Owego Rotary Club recently awarded academic scholarships to two graduating students, one from Owego Free Academy (OFA) and one from Newark Valley High School. The key criteria for making the selection are involvement and leadership in high school activities, including athletics, clubs, and community service.

At the commencement exercises for OFA, Michael Yanchus was awarded a $1,000 Rotary Club scholarship. In recognition of his dedication to helping others, Broome-Tioga BOCES also honored Michael this year with a Student Community Service Award. This fall, he plans to attend the State University of New York at Oneonta.

Eleni Riechers, from the Newark Valley High School, was also awarded a $1,000 Rotary Club scholarship at her school’s commencement exercises. She has volunteered extensively in her community, been a dance instructor since 2008 and is a member of the National Honor Society. Eleni plans to attend Elmira College this fall.

Since 2001, the Owego Rotary Club has annually awarded academic scholarships to outstanding students from Tioga County.
