The Candor Historical Society is holding their annual Bake Sale and Christmas Market during Candor’s Fall Festival of Events on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the their new location on 25 Main St.
This year they are also participating with the New York Path Through History Weekend (www.paththroughhistory.iloveny.com), and will hold an open house for those who want to enjoy a few reminiscences, check out the status of the Center, or discover ways in which they can help the Historical Society succeed in their most recent endeavor.
Although the History Center is not up to snuff and not ready to open to the public on a regular basis, this historic location has played a big part in Candor’s Agricultural History. The Historical Society is working hard to assemble and organize a multitude of records and a few displays, but there is still much to be done. A separate account is being set up to handle donations, grants, etc. specifically for their capital project.
The Open House will display various poster presentations depicting Candor’s 200-years of history in Tioga County. The tour will include the second floor where the Candor Masonic Lodge presently holds their meetings.
Unlike other events, there is no ‘big’ yard sale this year, and there will be no drop-off of useable items. However, the bake sale is a major part of our income for annual maintenance, so anyone wishing to donate baked goods can drop them off starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Carol’s Books will also on hand to include her Candor History Books, as well as her latest novels. Historical Society promotional items will be available for purchase. And coffee is on the house. Enjoy a cup while you browse.
As a special addition to The Candor Historical Society’s participation this year, there will be a special historic cemetery walking tour of Maple Grove Cemetery during Candor’s Fall Festival of Events on Sunday, Oct. 7 starting at 1 p.m. This will be a narrated, guided tour by Phil Jordan, highlighting many of his remembrances of various locals now interned in Maple Grove. Sure to be an entertaining talk, the tour will start at the front entrance to the cemetery.
The event is free and open to the public. A donation box for the Candor’s History Center Renovation project Fund will be available for those who wish to contribute. Contact Dick Zavatto for more information in regards to the Cemetery Walk by calling (607) 236-4011, or email dzavatto@hotmail.com.
