Casey Donholt and Adam Mittl once again put their stamp on Champion Speedway on June 30.
The event took place under blazing heat. Temperatures hit 95 degrees, but after “Doctor Dirt” Russ Cornell had done a nice job of blading the track surface earlier in the week, track promoter Jason Bonsignore spent all afternoon heavily watering the facility and that, along with East Coast Speedway legend, Danny “Moonbeam” Fallon, doing an excellent job of running the drag, produced a very nice race track with multiple lines.
Jeremy Parsons was one of the speedway riders to use the outside in an entertaining seesaw battle with Donholt in the scratch heats, in which Donholt took the lead back at the finish by inches.
The scratch main event pitted Donholt against Parsons, Mittl, Lenny McBride and young Spencer Portararo. Unfortunately the starting gates broke earlier and a flag start had to be used. Donholt anticipated the start the best and got himself to the first corner first on his Sammy Tanner Arai Helmets sponsored JAWA. He would be pressured hard by Parsons for four laps but made no mistake for his 4th Scratch Main win in a row of the season.
Mittl, the 5-time track champion, moved into the lead early on in the Handicap Main Event and while Parsons was running second Donholt attempted to make an outside line pass up against the wall but ran out of space and went down. Spencer Portararo then moved up into third with Andy Crawford fourth and McBride fifth. The order stayed this way with Mittl taking his 2nd Handicap Main Event win of 2018 on his Scott’s Headers and Mufflers / Justice Bros / Oury Grip Tanks Auto sponsored GM.
Stoney Ray made a successful return to the Champion bullring oval after a two-year absence, winning the Quad Pro Main event. Jimmer Ulrich, one of the many newcomers in the ATV program at Champion this summer, did a great job to win his first Quad AM final.
The next event at Champion is July 28, and the strongest speedway rider headcount of the year is expected!
