Flu vaccine available to underinsured Tioga County residents

Flu season is approaching and Tioga County Public Health has a limited supply of free influenza vaccines (flu shots) available for Tioga County residents over the age of three who do not have health insurance coverage.

According to the health department, individuals must get their flu shot every year to ensure they are protected against multiple strains of the flu. The flu shot, they added, is especially important for those who work with children or senior citizens, or have a chronic illness like diabetes, asthma or heart disease.

There are two flu shot clinics coming up on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and on Friday, Nov. 17, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Health & Human Services Building located at 1062 State Route 38 in Owego.

If you and your family are interested in attending either flu shot clinic, please pre-register at www.health.ny.gov/go2clinic/54 or call Tioga County Public Health Nursing at (607) 687-8600 (option 3) to schedule an appointment.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the flu vaccine, call the health department or visit www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/misconceptions.htm.
