Readers’ Column for the week of Jan. 24, 2016

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

NASA has just announced that last year was the warmest year on record. You know how much warmer it was? After digging through all the hype and phony baloney nonsense, wait for it – the temp worldwide was up 1 quarter of 1 degree! You wouldn’t even feel that! For this, we go through all the nonsense, cutting carbon emissions, etc.? Yeah, right. More feel good, accomplish nothing nonsense!

Thank you to the Candor American Legion for your kindness to our men and women serving our country. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.

Bernie Sanders is right about at least one thing – we will never have high quality affordable health care as long as health insurance companies exist.

~

Everyone should see the movie “13 hours”! You’ll see the true story of the Benghazi “incident” and learn why those in government, including Hillary AND Nobama need to be under indictment, or in jail, NOW! The media is obviously providing cover for these criminals, which needs to stop, NOW!

~

People write in week after week bashing the Republicans and Democrats. I pretty much skip over all of this because New York State, no matter how you vote, will always be Democratic because of the City. I sent in some very interesting news that is important to many in the Village of Owego and it was swept under the carpet and not printed.

~

To the person who thinks the next Owego-Apalachin Superintendent of schools should be required to live in the district, you will seriously limit your applicant pool if you do that. That requirement may eliminate a potentially great superintendent who would not want to subject their children to constant scrutiny and criticism. And it will definitely deter good people who understand that it is a difficult and time consuming job in and of itself, so the additional requirement of living in the community means that every time they go to a school event with their kids, or out to a restaurant, or to the grocery store, or the bank, or a movie, or a walk with their family – it turns into a public event, rather than time with their family – which is already in very short supply due to the nature of the job today. I don’t think there is any reason to believe that a superintendent must live in the community in order to care about the kids, the school, and the community. In fact the residency requirement may very well lead to greater stress and early burnout.

~

I’m confused as to why a reader commented that the school superintendent living in the district is required. It is not. It is of course a valid subject for debate but such a requirement would likely be a detriment to recruiting the best candidate in smaller, more rural districts such as we have in this area of New York. If one were to apply this across the board, individuals working for Lockheed Martin in Owego would be required to live in Owego. Work at Olive Garden? Have to live in Vestal, etc. Still like the idea?

Imagine this. A policeman arrives at your door to give you a ticket for running the red light at the corner of North Avenue and George Street. “Wait,” you say. “There is no red light at the corner of North Avenue and George Street.” “Sorry,” says the officer, “we’ve reviewed the situation and determined that there should be one. Therefore you are guilty of running it.” And as you have no problem with applying an after-the-fact determination to the Clinton e-mail situation, you have demonstrated to the officer you believe in the validity of such a methodology. After all, an ex post facto determination is valid. Correct?

To the person who stated, “Many people have died just from the smell of peanuts or other nuts.” Can you cite a single documented case of this happening from any authoritative scientific or medical journal? I’ve searched the internet and was unable to do so. For information, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially documents only 13 deaths between 1996 and 2006, all of which were due to ingestion of peanuts and other nuts, none due to airborne inhalation.

Lying is time-consuming. Proof of that is a recent State of the Nation address. Instead of using over an hour to blame others and making excuses, the long-winded speaker could have, if he was a truth teller, shortened the speech into one sentence. “Everything stinks, and I have made it worse.”

On Jan. 14, 2016, New York Representative Christopher Friend (R) joined representatives of the New York State Restaurant Association and spoke against the Governor’s goal of a universal $15 minimum wage in New York State.

I can hardly wait for the Republicans to get their man in the driver’s seat so that the Democrats can pan him for four, or God forbid eight years like they did our current president. There is absolutely no respect for the highest office any more or any other elective office for that matter. It is just me for me while I pad my bank account and to hell with our country and everyone else.

~

Can anyone please explain what the Republican Tea Party Stands for? As I understand it, they are a group that hate government but always have their hand out, hate taxes but some members are on Government Boards. Support Churches as long as you believe what they believe. Bad mouth the President but offer no support.

~

The Tioga Central School web page announces that the pool is closed due to mechanical failure and is closed until further notice. Is the pool director still getting his paycheck? Wake up Tioga School Board and administration, Tioga Central School cannot afford a swimming pool. Close it and cut back on the tax liability. Let’s start being responsible for taxpayer money and stop asking for big increases in taxes.

To the person who has our female Red Bone Coon Hound, please return to 154 Catlin Hill Rd., no questions asked.

~

For the immature neighbor who called in a false report. Grow up! You were “turned in” in 2011 for several wrong doings! You were wrong, admit it, and move on! Since that time you have tried everything to move us out. Not happening, not only that, but misinforming others in your plot. Remember “you point a finger at us, three more point back at you!” As to “Owego’s Finest”, your conduct was unprofessional, deplorable! What about calling in a false report and accusing an innocent bystander?

~

The person who said Hillary Clinton is not interested in taking our guns should read the websites one of your reader’s provided in last week’s column. She definitely would love to confiscate our guns. Sometimes people speak before they check things out.

~

I bought two different Powerball tickets from two different vendors in New York State. I find that the size of the tickets is different. How could that be if all the machines are the same and everything is the same. I think that’s strange.

~

I would like to know if the business called the Tax Ladies in Owego is still in business. We have gone to them for at least the last 10 years or more. I tried to contact them by phone and by email but no answer. What happens to our tax records and why aren’t we being notified if they are out of business. We need to know so we can find someone else. Does anybody know anyone else doing income tax preparation?

~

After hearing the State of the Union Address can there be any doubt Obama is delusional?

~

Has anybody else seen the new bumper sticker, GOP, party of perpetual fear?

I’ve been around a long time, ever since the days of FDR. All I’ve ever seen sitting in the White House is one career politician after another. Look what that’s getting us. Look at the shape we are in today. Of all those career politicians only two of them have ever shown any real backbone. One of them was Harry Truman when he dropped a couple atomic bombs on Japan and that ended WWII in a hurry, then there was Ronald Reagan, after Libya blew up our airliner over Scotland he sent a few cruise missiles into Libya in an attempt to assonate Omar Kadafi. The assonate failed but we got a few of Kadafi’s family. Too bad. So what are we looking at again, we’re looking at a whole bunch of career politicians that want to sit in the oval office. What exactly is that going to get us, further and further down the toilet than where we are now? Of all those running there are only three who are not career politicians. I would consider any one of those three to be a frontrunner and I would be willing to vote for any one of those three and give someone a chance who is not a career politician looking out for his own backside and fulfilling his party’s biddings. Let’s see what happens. Many won’t agree with this but that’s the way it goes.

I just want to say that Andrew Cuomo must go. The governorship of New York and the whole entire program is crazy because there’s no term limit for the governor of New York. This man has to go, he just has to go!

~

This 2016 election might be the end of two dynasties, the Clinton’s and the Bush’s. No one wants a so-called establishment candidate. The reason is they cannot be trusted and they are the do nothings.

~

Check out the movie 13 hours, which shows what really happened at Benghazi. Three survivors said the movie is accurate and I think should even be understood by low information socialist democrats. The perfidious Hillary Clinton was asked this question, “Either you or the three survivors are lying” to which she replied, “It’s not me”. Watch the movie and decide for yourself and don’t forget to vote at the end of this year.

Back in the good old days Johnson City, for example, had four pool halls. The place in the Binghamton Plaza just closed, now there are no places around to play pool besides that small place on Endicott’s Washington Avenue. Where can I shoot some pool in this whole general area? I’d like some help from your readers.

~

I was not able to find the GOP debate on any channels I get here in Owego. Apparently we weren’t able to get. That is news and you would think on our news they would tell us that we would not be able to get it.

~

Remember the old saying, loose lips sink ships? It still applies today.

~

So someone wants to investigate Trump’s private life. That’s a good idea! Then also investigate Hillary and Bill too. Check on Hillary’s finances and whom she takes vacation with. I think the caller just wants to look at those rumored pictures of Donald Trump’s present model wife. I would too!

~

To the republican theme song, I want to turn back time. Wrong direction.

~

Remember the old saying, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer?” It still applies today.

~

In answer to the person concerned about Coach Vickler’s football record, you need to take in consideration the fact that in the 50’s, 60’s, and early 70’s there weren’t as many athletic programs as there are today therefore, the coaches in those periods had a lot more talent to work with. Owego did provide a lot of championship teams and great athletes that went onto play college, semi pro, professional and other parts of football.

~

I was dismayed to find out the Binghamton Optical on North Avenue in Owego closed. I would also like to know whom could I go to for new glasses that takes Medicaid.

~

Here’s a lesson for some of you people out there. Respect is earned, it is not demanded.

~

This is for all the people who keep bashing Hillary Clinton. Think about what our great country would be like if Donald Trump became president. God help us all!

~

Follow the news. Hillary allies herself and now supports nobama during the recent phony so-called socialist democrat debate. Could it just be Hillary wants to influence nobama to not indict her for her illegal email escapades? You decide.

~

Beep, beep, beep. Hot off the press! Hot off the press! Donald Trump’s running mate for 2016 is going to be the new Colonel Sanders as vice president. It’s hot off the press ladies and gentlemen! Beep, beep, beep. Thank you, thank you very much.

~

Do you think Hillary is too big to fail? Do you think she deserves to be president because she knows how to cheat the system? Do you think Hillary wants to be president so she can pardon herself after she is indicted? Or maybe Bernie will pardon her. Fat chance!

~

I recently received a very nice check from the state for overpaying my taxes and would like to thank Mayor Millar, Don Castellucci, Martha Sauerbrey, the O/A school board, or all of the above for NOT doing their job.

My home has had a tankless water heater for eight years or so. I don’t like it and will be doing my own research to make a switch. The problem is that a certain volume of water must flow through the system to signal it to starting heating. Therefore, it is very difficult to run just a small stream of hot or warm water. Time and water are wasted waiting for it to heat up. If you turn off the hot briefly and turn it back on, you have to wait again for it to heat up. I find it very annoying. Supposedly tankless saves money, but comfort and convenience are important too. I hope this is helpful.
