The American Civic Association in Binghamton has teamed up with NBT Bank to provide local immigrants with the tools to build a better future here in America. These adults received free classes from NBT Bank representatives recently to learn basic money management and how to use a checking account.

“It’s never too late to learn and improve money management skills,” said Grace Welch, branch manager at NBT Bank of Vestal, adding, “These adults are preparing to find their first jobs in America, receiving their first paychecks and confronting the challenges associated with managing money in the U.S. – some for the first time. We’re very proud to have a chance to guide them through it.”

“The individuals we support are truly the ideal audience for NBT’s Strive program. They are learning a whole new culture, while facing some very difficult life situations. The financial learning they are receiving is a critical part of the necessary life skills they need right now and we’re very grateful to NBT for their assistance in providing the information,” said Mayra Garcia, director of the American Civic Association in Binghamton.

Because developing smart financial habits helps build a brighter financial future, NBT Bank created its Strive® financial literacy program in 2012. Strive is a year-round program that helps kids, teens and adults establish a positive relationship with money early in life, and navigate personal finance as their financial needs mature. NBT Bank has conducted more than 300 classroom presentations in school districts and community groups across its six-state footprint.
