Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital cut the ribbon this past week on its new Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The new unit, which will open its doors to patients on Sunday, Dec. 14, has been designed to offer intensive care patients specialized care in spacious private rooms with natural light designed to welcome family support.

James Walsh, MD, medical director of the Intensive Care Unit said, “Today Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital opens the next chapter on our patient care for our most critically ill patients. Our new ICU will allow the hospital to specialize our care even further, with designated care stations for our cardiovascular, surgical, and medical patients. Caring for patients in intensive care takes a united, dedicated team. The design of the new ICU supports these specialized teams.”

Marie Droege, president of Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital welcomed the new unit. She stated, “We are pleased we are able to offer our ICU patients the most state-of-the-art care. This project was a great step forward in Guthrie’s vision of putting the patient at the center of what we do and clinical excellence. These new facilities will ensure that those patients who need the most intense care, and the families that support them, have an environment which will actively support their recovery.”

The new ICU will offer 26 private intensive care rooms, including three rooms for patients with unique infection control needs, a specially designed Intensive Care Procedure room, and increased space and facilities for family members. Its location adjacent to the Emergency Room and on a floor directly below the Operating Room will also help to minimize patient transfer times.

The ribbon cutting was followed by a community open house, which allowed visitors a chance to view the new unit and to meet members of the ICU team who will soon be working there.
