Young Caleb “Flying Mullet” Stewart, of Apalachin, who had the second-most main event wins last season at Champion Speedway, got back into the winners’ circle on May 30 in convincing fashion!
After a disastrous night of mechanical bad luck at the first race of the season, Stewart was consistently strong this evening and earned his place in the Grand Final.
Riding a thundering GM motor this time, Stewart was to come out of gate two in the main with the current track champion, Casey Donholt, in one. Donholt made the gate, and Stewart got off the line not far behind, but immediately went to the outside on his Justice Brothers/ ODI Grips/ Jim Sisemore Trucking/ Scotts Headers/ LOPKE/ Owego Taxi-sponsored machine and quickly went around Donholt. Each lap Stewart chased the dirt line and made more and more of a lead until taking the checkered flag!
Cody Pierce of Spencer, the teenage sensation on the track, did the exact same thing in the D-2 main; he slightly missed the start, but still powered his Justice Brothers/ ODI Grips/ Cooks septic/ Dean and Christine Wight/ LOPKE/ Jim Hovanec/ Niki Curcio sponsored GM around the outside of leader Joel Farwell and proceeded to build a big lead on the dirt line to take the Victory!
In the 250 class speedway action, young phenom Grayson Frederici of Endicott, who won the prestigious Gumball Rally in California in February, got the hang of his 190cc JR bike by the end of the night and rode a steady and stylish race to outdistance Kabriel Howard, who also looked good! The Sephton family, owners of Powrsports X in Vestal, have been instrumental in Frederici’s fast development lately.
In the pro quad feature, Chris Harvey of the Fulton, New York, area came down to put his stamp on Champion Speedway and defeated a tough field with his strong gating and smooth inside riding.
At the time of press, the track was considering adding June 20 to the calendar and changing the previously scheduled event for Action Park East that day to June 19, due to several early-season rainouts thus far.
