Holy Week at First Presbyterian Union Church and around Owego

The First Presbyterian Union Church, located at the corner of North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego, has announced that Holy Week services will be held in the sanctuary, and will also be available on Zoom – ID: 819 4028 9108; Password: FPUC. The public is invited.

On Palm Sunday, April 2, the 10 a.m. worship service will celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. All worshipers will be given Eco-palms from Guatemala; guests are invited to process into the sanctuary singing “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna”. The service will also include a congregational reading of the Passion Story. Sharing Offering will be dedicated to support relief efforts in the USA and overseas.

The April 14 Maundy Thursday worship service will begin at 7 p.m. and will include the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Pastor Bruce Gillette’s sermon is “In Remembrance of Me.” The Contemporary Choir’s anthem will be “Behold the Lamb” and the offertory will be “Near the Cross.”

On April 15, the ecumenical Good Friday worship service will be at 7 p.m. at the Owego United Methodist Church, with short meditations by local pastors on the seven last words of Jesus on the cross. Pastors Bruce and Carolyn Gillette will be sharing homilies on the first and second words.

On Easter Sunday, April 17, a Sunrise Service will take place at Terry and Ginny Hills’ home, located at 2382 Bodle Hill Rd. in Owego, for worship, food and fellowship. The service, led by Pastor Carolyn Gillette and Stuart Rogers, is scheduled to begin at approximately 6:15 a.m. on the Hills’ deck, so dress for the weather. 

Easter Worship Service with the Lord’s Supper will be at 10 a.m., celebrating Jesus’ resurrection that gives us everlasting life. Pastor Bruce Gillette’s sermon will be “I Have Seen the Lord”, based on Matthew 28:1-10. The joyful music will include the anthem “Resurrection Victory”, Easter hymns, and the Hallelujah Chorus.
