Mystic Moon is the market for all things metaphysical, right on Lake Street in Owego. From crystals and gems to tarot, owner Kelly Hathaway is sure patrons will find a way to tap into their inner and higher selves.
Hathaway purchased The Petal Pusher gift shop and eventually changed the name to Mystic Moon last October following her original dream of owning a shop in Owego to sell, teach and spread the word on all things mystic.
“I’ve always been interested in the metaphysical,” Hathaway said. “People are more comfortable coming out and asking questions and learning about it.”
One thing people are interested in learning about are gems and crystals and how different combinations could yield benefits in one’s life. For example, if sodalite and angelite stones are held together, they create a magnetic field, or vibration between them. This sensation can produce a calming effect to ground and clear the mind. If someone has a tendency of feeling highly stressed or down, they can gather deep color stones with low vibrations; keep them in their pockets or a mojo bag or even scatter around work places to alleviate what they are feeling.

It’s all about tapping into ones inner or higher self. Samantha Morris, who does regular tarot card readings at Mystic Moon, uses a pendulum to communicate with her higher self.
They aren’t only pretty to look at, but are of use to anyone who is willing to put their trust in it. Simply dangle the pendant on a thin chain in an extended hand and stay completely still. The pendulum will begin to rotate in a circle and will change directions to answer questions; out and back for yes, left to right for no. Some rely on their higher self for important decisions; while others use a pendulum for something as simple as “did I leave my car keys in the car?”
“If people would just slow down and take time to smell the roses,” Hathaway said. “But today people are very busy-busy, and they don’t take the time to learn to see how these things can aid them in life.”
Hathaway said that her shop has become a hub for spiritual practices. People stop in to ask her for recommendations of card readers, psychics, paranormal investigators (something that Hathaway does herself) and more.
“People are more curious about it, and they are wanting to learn about it,” she said.
Everything in Mystic Moon is intended for good, too, Hathaway said. Because she says karma is real and if anything is used for the wrong purposes, for example the vessels used for burning herbs, karma will “come back to get you.”
Her goal for the next year is to open the shop up to more classes. Previously, Mystic Moon has put on classes and workshops on tarot reading, gem and crystal uses and other spiritual practices, but Starkweather wants to expand further to include practices such as pendulum usage, recognizing paranormal activity and possibly even dabbling in astrology.
Samantha Morris will be having tarot card readings every Tuesday and Thursday through October, and Maryellen Palmatier will be reading angel cards on Oct. 19. To stay up to date on activities, follow Mystic Moon on Facebook.
Mystic Moon carries more than just sage sticks, oracle decks and incense. Starkweather also stocks full of fun and seasonal items. From novelty socks, to unique clothing and seasonal decorations, the shop is open to all tastes.
The fall season may pique curiosity in the mysticism that is held inside Mystic Moon. You never know what you might tap in to.
