On Dec. 9, the VFW in Owego held their annual children’s Christmas Party and what a party it was! This year’s turn out of over 270 children and their families was the largest in the five years it has been held, according to the organizers. So much so that the event had to be divided into two separate sessions.

Entering the doors, the kids were greeted with tables full of pizza, chips, drinks and homemade cookies. Volunteers served the tasty treats.

DJ Grover played tunes to get the kids even more excited to see Santa. Homemade cookies were his reward.

Then, Lori McDonough called out a name for a youngster to sit on Santa’s lap and receive a gift. One little girl received her gift from Santa that was bigger than she was, but her smile was even larger than the package!

Soon after, the first group was treated to a movie, “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”   The next group of ecstatic children then came in to find that it is Christmas at the VFW.
Lori McDonough and her many helpers work diligently to ensure this party is fun for all.

Throughout the year the VFW accepts donations to fund events for local children. Volunteers, 15 or so, do the shopping, wrapping, and all that’s needed to make this event a success.

The VFW also hosts a children’s picnic in mid-summer with lots of activities. Activities include a bounce house, games with prizes, food, and 30-40 bicycles that are raffled off.

Volunteer Gail Tapia stated that the VFW isn’t only there to support their members but also their town.
