Bostwick Auctions, located at 1121 Owego Rd. in Candor, broke ground on a new addition at their property on April 5.

Visitors and buyers from all over the United States and the region stop in Bostwick Auctions, so plans to add a 76-foot x 100-foot addition, which will include a 100-foot porch, is exciting news for the community. Once construction is complete, the entire revamped building will be transformed into one large antique mall.

Auction fans need not worry, though. Auctions will still continue, but be relocated inside the auction barn on the back part of the property. And, more good news at Bostwick’s, outdoor flea markets will be held on Saturday’s during warm weather months.

The expansion at Bostwick’s will also allow a remodel and extra space for Kim’s Diner, a popular eatery located inside the existing building and known for its home cooked meals and baked goods. The diner is slated to double in size and accommodate upwards of 70 people. Originally opened in 2000, the diner will continue to serve its signature full breakfast and lunch, but will expand its hours four evenings a week to include a new dinner menu.

“It’s something we’ve been dreaming about for years,” said owner, Laurie Bostwick, adding that installation of air conditioning is on the “to-do” list as well.

Laurie and her husband, Pat, both owners in the business, anticipate a completion date of July 1, with expanded hours for the entire property. The antique mall is planned to be open Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Proposed new hours for Kim’s Diner will be Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

As many as ten part-time positions will be added to the auction staff and kitchen crew, and as an immediate need, Kim’s Diner is seeking an experienced cook.

After nearly three decades and three generations, family is still a central part of running Bostwick Auctions, and both Laurie and Pat believe the friendly, family atmosphere is a main ingredient that draws visitors to their business.

Look around on the walls of each building, too, and visitors will find some 500 or more collectible signs to view. Although not for sale, the signs decorating the walls add a nostalgic feel to the property.

As for items for sale, Laurie commented, “There is something here for everyone’s pocket book.”

The Bostwick’s added that most visitors who walk through the doors should be able to find something that appeals to them.

Laurie and Pat are also reaching out to their patrons to help them with brand recognition, or basically, seeking ideas for a fresh, new name for the business.

“A simple two-word name,” is what Laurie said they are looking for, and something that will help identify the revamped Bostwick Auctions.

And not just an auction house and antique mall, an Open Bible Fellowship is held on-site each Thursday evening, with a meal starting at 6 p.m. and Bible study at 6:45 p.m.

Sounds wonderful! You just don’t want to change the relaxed comfy feeling of the place. It really is a fun friendly place. How about calling it HOMETOWN Auction House or Bostwick’s Hometown Auction.
