Fourth and fifth grade students at Apalachin Elementary School recently, along with their families, raised $8,030 for the American Heart Association during their “Jump Rope for Heart” event.

Throughout the month of February, students learn about their heart, the importance of exercising, nutrition, and about being a contributing citizen. Their culminating activity is the annual “Jump

Rope for Heart” event the American Heart Association organizes. The Apalachin Elementary School began holding this event in 1992.

During the recent event, fourth and fifth grade students did jump roping in teams of six for 90 minutes. The students showed off various jump rope tricks and did a lot of heart healthy jumping.  A few of the students even jumped longer than Mrs. VanHouten and their own parents in the “jump off” competitions.

The students and staff would like to thank Tom Donovan for being their DJ for the day. They would also like to thank their parent volunteers; Mrs. Springsteen, Mrs. Herceg, and Mrs. Sunderland for volunteering their time to help out with all of the paperwork involved.

Mrs. Kmetz‘s class was the leading contributing class this year with a class total of $2,167.

Participating, in fifth grade, were Aaron Klett, Haley Stephens, Kathryn Donnelly-Taylor, Smantha Pedro, Smantha Ward, Elijah Bailey, Emma Cooper, Connor Curtis and Dominick Curley.
