My letter to Donald Trump, president-elect

Dear Editor,

The following is a letter sent to Mr. Donald Trump, president-elect. Here is the context.

Dear Mr. Trump,

When our government needs more money than it is authorized to spend, Congress usually waits until the last minute and then passes legislation to authorize an increase in the debt ceiling. Then the President signs the legislation into law, and the government continues to operate; in other words, the government is living beyond its means and it does not pay back the money it borrows.

The result is that the Federal debt keeps going up. I see that as the greatest to our national security. Time and time again it has been proven that when taxes are raised it does not produce enough money for the government to operate, much less to pay back what it has borrowed. The result is the Federal debt keeps going up.

It seems to me that the only way to reduce the deficit is for the government to spend less money – to live within its means. My question to you then is this: Where would you advocate spending less, so that the government will start to decrease the Federal deficit?

I ask permission to submit your answer to the Editor of the Owego Pennysaver. Their policy is limit letters to 400 words or fewer.

Sincerely yours,

Karl Tiemann

Owego, N.Y.
