Corey A. Green was officially appointed Owego Apalachin (OA) Central School District’s new superintendent by the OA Board of Education at its regular meeting on May 19. Green will begin his tenure as superintendent on July 1.

Dr. Bill Russell, who came aboard as OA superintendent the first day of July 2006, will retire on June 30 after leading the district for a decade.

“Owego Apalachin is an excellent school district, and its reputation for academic excellence, extra-curricular programs, and a strong school-community connection is well known across our region,” Green said. “I appreciate the confidence that the OA board has shown in me.”

“I look forward to the continued expansion of the district’s impressive programs,” Green added, “as well as meeting with and working alongside our faculty, staff and everyone who shares a keen interest in fueling the success of our students.”

David Barton, Owego Apalachin board president, said that in making their decision to appoint Green, board members relied on input from five search committees assembled to represent a cross-section of all district stakeholders. This collective input was instrumental in assisting the board in reaching its final decision, Barton added.

“Mr. Green has an impressive, diverse administrative background which the Board of Education believes will be beneficial in moving our school district forward,” Barton said.

“Corey impressed us as the type of individual who puts students first, and who will lead our district in continuing to improve our educational programs,” said Gene Cvik, board vice president. “We also anticipate that he will become a very active member of the Owego Apalachin community.”

Green is currently the Sidney Central School District assistant superintendent, a position he has held for five years. He also served as an elementary / middle school principal in Sidney from 2007 to 2011.

To begin his career in education, Green spent a year in North Carolina where he taught at the elementary school level. He then served as an elementary teacher and a physical education teacher in Binghamton from 2000 to 2007.

Green received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The College of St. Rose. He also holds a master’s degree in literacy from Walden University.

Green lives in Endwell with his wife Shannon and their sons Connor (14) and Cullen (11).
