Mentoring program returning to the Southern Tier

A mentoring program that once helped thousands of New York students is returning to the Southern Tier, and Modern Marketing Concepts, Inc. (MMC) will be among the first partners in a new pilot program. The New York State Mentorship Program aims to connect underserved youth with adult role models who work one-on-one with them to motivate them to succeed in school and in life.

“We are thrilled to be able to help bring back this important program to the Southern Tier,” said Scott Kay, president of the Building Products Division of Modern Marketing Concepts, Inc. “We certainly will do everything we can to make sure it is a success.”

Ten MMC employees have already been selected and screened to serve as weekly mentors at two elementary schools in the Windsor Central School District. The mentors will work individually with students at Floyd L. Bell Elementary School and C.R. Weeks throughout the summer.

“We are so thankful to have been chosen as the site for this pilot program, and we can’t wait to see how it helps our students succeed,” said Jason Andrews, Superintendent of the Windsor Schools.

The New York State Mentoring Program was born from the vision of Matilda Cuomo, who launched the nation’s first school-based one-to-one mentorship program, which ran from 1987 until 1995. The program provides the resources to screen volunteers and connect them with those who will benefit the most from the interaction. Volunteers also receive training and a curriculum to follow. Goals of the program include greater participation in school, improved attendance, higher graduation and college admission rates and better overall performance.
