Here it is spring, and golf season is starting. How sad that we have lost one of the nicest courses in the area. Newark Valley Golf Club has closed. The only course I know of that was really senior friendly, and reasonably priced. Nearly all flat, no water hazards that are so big that a normal person can’t possibly hit the ball over, and not too long to walk without becoming completely exhausted. I think people have the idea that in order for something to be any good it has to be new, big and expensive to play. I wish Mr. Cleveland luck in his next endeavor (retirement?). You will be missed.

I don’t get all the outrage against Trump saying a women should face some form of punishment if she undergoes an abortion should it be outlawed. I would think that if murder is a crime, then killing your child by aborting it would also justify some form of punishment. Even Hillary believes an unborn child is human, she just doesn’t think it has any rights. That’s what scares me. If she can decide that a child (that is a human) doesn’t deserve any human rights, who else will she deem unworthy of human rights?

I keep reading letters from people supporting Bernie Sanders. That’s okay, but you might want to look at what has happened to ALL countries that went Socialist. Socialism is a failure! Why would you vote for it?

Are you fed up with the two-party duopoly? Our electoral system has been gamed by both major parties – both beholden to corporate power and influence. Both parties are funded by corporate wealth and both are inclined to serve corporate interests. The voters are treated as an inconvenience that the parties seek to manipulate in tightly controlled elections biased to favor party-approved candidates. If you’ve paid much attention to the presidential campaigns of both parties, you’ve been witnessing an anti-democratic election process at its worst. In a year when voters of both parties are rising up to challenge the status quo, we are most likely to see a Republican billionaire and a Democrat multi-millionaire facing off in November. My condolences to the oppressed working people of this country. What the heck were you thinking?

Are you a tax dodger? I highly doubt it, because the IRS would come down on you like a ton of bricks – unless you are a major corporation. Every year from 2006 to 2012, some two-thirds of U.S. corporations did not pay any federal income tax. Tax incentives, loopholes, corporate inversions, offshore accounts, territorial tax systems in other countries: these are just some of the tools in the tax dodger’s toolbox. Bernie Sanders recently said, “There is something profoundly wrong in America when one out of five profitable corporations pay nothing in federal income tax.” Average citizens have no creative options to avoid paying taxes, but corporations have influence over legislation and regulation. They often get their way. Bernie Sanders says enough is enough. When corporations don’t pay their fair share of taxes, they weaken our economy and hurt the country. Corporate tax avoidance would be a high priority issue for a Sanders administration.

Spring is here! Please help with how your cemetery looks this spring and summer. Many cemeteries do not have the financial means to pay for full time caretaker employees. Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, N.Y. is having a cleanup day Saturday, April 30 at 9 a.m. Bring rakes, trimmers, etc. Rain date is Saturday, May 7. All winter decorations must be removed before May 1.

Maybe Cal Harris should change his name to Jon Jones. I think it’s the fourth time maybe he’s been in court before the judge and he gets probation or community service. I don’t know which country he’s going to do the community service in, is it going to be Mexico or the USA? Whatever, that’s the way things go today.

If Donald Trump had 1,237 delegates or is close to that number, he should be a Republican nominee. If the establishment or Republican Party tries to put another nominee or outsider in, people will not vote in the presidential election in November. The majority of Trump supporters will not go to the polls and vote in November.

I’ve got to give Kirk Martin credit for pursuing a fourth trial and for not talking to the press. I wish him all the luck. That man is guilty and he needs to pay for it.

Doctors in New York State are supposed to be cutting down on prescribing pain medication. I hope our local hospitals cut down on pain medications given to its patients. In the past hospitals gave pain medications to its patients like candy. Why hospitals push pain pills is bottom line, big profits over health safety.

They get grant money to combat the heroin epidemic and hire somebody to go tell doctors to not give out so many pain medicines. Does that make sense to anybody? The doctors should be telling people, not paying people to tell doctors!

Does anybody have a schedule of AARP driver safety courses? We need to take it before June in the Newark Valley / Berkshire / Owego area. If somebody has it please put it in this column.

I have an idea for Memorial Day. I was thinking if anybody would get enough people, come to the Kirby Park in Nichols on the Sunday before Memorial Day and bring a candle balloon, one per family or one balloon for each member of the family, and just as it starts getting dark, light them and send them up and see how many we can get at one time to see how many show up. If anybody would be interested in this I’d appreciate you get a hold of this column and get the Pennysaver to do a story so we can see how many balloons we can send up the day before Memorial Day.

He’s reasonably priced and doesn’t do anything more than what you went there for. He doesn’t talk you into all the extra stuff and he’s very nice to talk to. His number is 785-8830.

I am a life long Republican and I believe Donald Trump will embarrass the United States if he were elected president. He doesn’t have a real platform. Instead he belittles and mocks people, is sarcastic and tries to get people excited about ideas he can’t realistically accomplish. Donald Trump also doesn’t have the right sense of decorum to interact with other world leaders. A vote for Donald Trump is a vote for degrading the relationship of the United States with the other countries of the world.

Now that our new mayor’s in office, perhaps he can schedule work to repair the grade crossing on Talcott Street, which has been in bad repair for a long time. It also might help to put a stop line on Talcott Street before the grade crossing so that people, when they are trying to ingress and egress to North Avenue, don’t have the intersection blocked off by rude drivers.

I would love to have a presidential contest between Bernie and either Ted or Donald but you Bernie supporters are simply dreaming. The fix is in for Hillary because the democrat establishment elites have super delegates lined up. The republican elites will attempt to dump Donald or Ted but they will not succeed. The only event to stop Hillary would be an indictment, but nobama and his attorney general minion will prevent that unless democrat populism is forcefully apparent. Not much chance of that though.

As a taxpayer in the town of Nichols I was just wondering when the town highway department was going to come back and clean up the mess that was made when they trimmed the branches off the trees and the brush along the road. We also wondered when they would come back and open up the sluices so that the water will run down in the ditches and not into driveways.

The Aqua Aerobics group at the Owego pool on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday would like to thank the school for having such warm water recently in the pool. We understand it is for a youth program but we also appreciate the really warm water and would love to keep it up.

My concern is the length of red lights in Owego. The one by Mario’s, the one at East Front and the one on North Avenue by the antique store. Those lights have such a long wait period. Could someone check to see if that’s on the right timer and is appropriate, for those three red lights are awfully long.

This is about the ads on TV about emphysema. There is no one in my family that suffers from the disease but I still don’t like them. One day it showed up on channel 12, then I turned it to another channel and it was on that one also. I think those ads are gruesome and in poor taste and should be pulled.

Hooray, Hooray! The Halsey Valley Road elevation project is absolutely ludicrous. They can’t move the road 10 feet but they can move it 150 feet and put extended driveways out to that. That is absolutely LUDICROUS!

Voting republican. Do you ever think what your vote as a republican can bring you? It can bring you one step closer to poorer social security, an end to Medicare as you enjoy it. A poor environment in which to live and grow your family, and the list goes one. Why vote republican when you know you are voting against your own best interests.

I’d like to thank whichever one of the three individuals that was in charge Saturday for that little inch of snow we had. I can’t believe how they can waste taxpayer money. Mother Nature almost beat them with cleaning the roads up!

Our own election process is a complete national mess yet we go around telling other countries how to run an election. It’s like we decide who will have atomic bombs and we are the only one that set one off. Who the heck do we think we are?

To the person who called in last week looking for a dentist that would only do routine cleanings and charge for just that service. I work in a dental office and you need to be up front and state you only want a cleaning and nothing else. You might also want to try the Tioga County Dental Van if you live in Tioga County. They offer cleanings and care at a reasonable cost. I know during the summer months they are parked at the Community Center.

Check with BOCES, they used to have a dental assistant program and give free or low cost dental cleaning.
