Food Bank to host Day of Service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Food Bank to host Day of Service on Martin Luther King Jr. DayIn recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 18, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier is inviting the public to give back by volunteering on the National Day of Service. Volunteers will help to sort and repackage bulk food so it can be distributed to the one in four Southern Tier residents who receive assistance from the Food Bank each year.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” On Jan. 18, Americans across the country will answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

With schools and many businesses closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, volunteering as a family or group at the Food Bank is a great way to give back to the community while enjoying a family experience at the same time. Volunteers ages eight and above are encouraged to contact the Food Bank to schedule their volunteer experience or sign up online. In addition to volunteering, Food Bank staff will be available to give tours of the facility throughout the day.
