Paid tutor assistance needed

Nearly ten years ago, having seen a need to boost graduation rates, Catholic Charities Tioga Outreach Center and the Tioga County Department of Social Services partnered with Newark Valley School District to create an after school tutoring program which was christened Youth Engagement Services (YES). In addition to after school tutoring, students enrolled in the YES Club participate in community service activities, learn job skills, attend field trips that expand their cultural awareness, and participate in workshops ranging in subject from healthy relationships to good nutrition.

Having established a successful program, Catholic Charities began looking into expanding the YES Club into another high school. This year, thanks to the Floyd Hooker Foundation grant of the Community Foundation of the Twin Tiers and the J.M. McDonald Foundation, Catholic Charities was able to create a new partnership with Spencer-VanEtten High School and expand the YES program.

Over the last several months, as students have enrolled in the program, the number of students attending after school tutoring has begun to outpace the ability of the program staff to provide each student with the needed attention. Catholic Charities is in need of additional after school tutors. If you are knowledgeable in the areas of Algebra, English, U.S. History, or other subjects in which a high school student may need tutoring, have experience working with high school students, and are able to dedicate two hours per week (and possibly go on an occasional field trip) to tutoring, please contact Sonnie Siegfried at 414-1023. The tutoring position is a paid position.
