Check your property tax bills

Dear Editor,

In one of the local newspapers there was an article, dated Dec. 23, 2015, concerning NYS Tax rebate checks being issued starting Nov. 24 and everyone should have their rebate checks, if eligible, by the end of December. These are property tax rebate checks due to the ‘Three year property tax freeze’ program.

Property tax owners get a refund IF local municipalities stay under the 2 percent tax cap and not override it.

In another local newspaper there was an article where the Town of Owego Supervisor wants to discuss overriding the Property Tax cap AGAIN for 2016.

My question is this, has anyone received 2015 property tax refund checks yet? Yet the Town Supervisor wants to talk about overriding the 2 percent tax cap, AGAIN?

Wouldn’t it be nice if Town of Owego property owners could get a rebate check? Maybe it’s time for someone on the outside to look at the situation.

All of the ‘For Sale’ signs around the area are blending in and becoming “part of the scenery” for the Board. Check your Property tax bills that you’re receiving. How much did they go up? Mine went up 3.5 percent.

Sincerely,

Candy Sweppenheiser
