Tioga County Legislature to propose law that would extend exemption to Gold Star Parents

At noon on Tuesday at the Regular Meeting of the Tioga County Legislature, a local law will be introduced that would extend its existing veterans alternative property tax exemption, to Gold Star parents. The action requires municipalities to opt in through a local law.

The proposed law defines a Gold Star parent as the parent of a child “who died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war.”

The exemption would apply to county and real property taxes on the parent’s primary residence in the event that the child was unmarried at the time of her/his death. Otherwise, the surviving spouse would qualify for the benefit.

A public hearing will be held on the proposed local law for 10 a.m. on Nov. 19 at the County Office Building, and the Local Law will be officially adopted on Dec. 15, 2015.
