Tioga County joins the statewide “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” campaign, which is spearheaded by the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV).

The campaign encourages public, private and non-profit entities to raise awareness of the issue by embracing the color purple – the symbolic hue for domestic violence awareness – by shining purple lights on buildings or other structures in the community, wearing purple or sponsoring awareness events. Each year, hundreds of organizations and individuals across the state participate in the Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign.

In addition to shining the light, A New Hope Center is offering the community multiple ways to color the area purple. For example they are asking people to wear purple on Wednesday, Oct. 21, to help generate discussion and awareness of domestic violence and dating abuse.

They are also asking the community to participate in one (or more) of these additional opportunities.

Wear a purple ribbon. You can stop by A New Hope Center’s main office on Church Street in Owego to pick up a free ribbon, or call 687-6887.

You can wear a purple hair extension. They are available at The Hair Color Café by appointment for $10. Call 687-4323 to make an appointment.

You can display a purple light in your home or business. You can stop by A New Hope Center’s main office on Church Street in Owego to pick up a free light or call 687-6887. You can choose from bulb lights to string lights, or even a flameless candle.

Display a tabletop card by stopping by A New Hope Center’s office and picking one up for free.

Another option, have your pet wear a purple bandana. Call A New Hope Center at 687-6887 for a list of participating groomers.
