Primary elections taking place on Thursday

The primary elections leading to the Nov. 3 general elections in Tioga County, N.Y. will take place this year on Thursday, Sept. 10. Please take note of the date change that was dictated by the New York State Board of Elections due to a holiday.

For the primary election, voting will be open from noon to 9 p.m. at various polling locations throughout the county. For a map of locations, visit tiogacountyny.com/departments/board-of-elections/ or call the Board of Elections office, which has relocated to 1062 State Route 38 in Owego, N.Y., at (607) 687-8261.

For this year’s primary election, there are nine Republicans vying to run in the general election for four seats, to include the Tioga County Clerk position being vacated by Robert Woodburn, and three Democrats vying for two seats on the Richford Town Council.

Running in the primary elections for Tioga County Clerk, which will be found on the ballot at each polling location in the county, are Republicans Debbie Howard and Andrea Klett.

In Candor, N.Y., Republicans Nancy Leonard, Patricia Halstead, and Connie Kulze are running to earn a seat in the general election for Town Clerk. Voters will be able to select one.

In the Town of Tioga, Republicans Karen Wells and Brenda Middendorf will challenge each other to be on the ballot in November’s general election for Tioga Town Clerk. Also in the Town of Tioga, Miranda Fisher, a Republican, for a spot on the general election ballot, is challenging Republican incumbent Paul Martin Jr. for Town of Tioga Justice.

There are no primary challenges in Berkshire, Newark Valley, Owego, Nichols, Barton and Spencer, N.Y. outside of the primary challenge for Tioga County Clerk; however, in Richford, N.Y., three Democrats – William Stall Sr., Cynthia Herrick, and Ricky Brown will be challenging each other for two vacant seats on the Town Council.

Looking beyond the primary elections, Bernadette M. Toombs, Republican commissioner for the Tioga County Board of Elections, is reaching out to county residents to solicit inspectors for November’s general election.
