Owego Little League News

Hyde Park’s four diamonds had 37 teams competing in Owego Little League’s (OLL) 20th annual postseason tournaments – 21 in 10U and 16 in 12U.

Tourney Co-Directors Eric Hawkins and OLL VP-Baseball Chris Rieg say congratulations and thanks to all participating teams.

Champion Elmira Mark Twain Little League Manager Chris Odum stated, “Thanks to everyone in Owego who made this tournament a success. Class act all the way. Great tourney.”

OLL Tournament and Regular Season Baseball had another great year thanks to community support from many.

President Ken Winters asks the Owego Little League family to thank sponsors when they do business at their place of business. Some sponsors have many years of sponsorship donations to OLL.

Treasurer Steve Lounsberry says all sponsors deserve thanks for making OLL free for kids for 64 consecutive years.

Johnson City, Greene and Candor 10U Champions

Twenty one teams played in the 10U Tournament from July 20 through July 31. Tournament Co-Director Eric Hawkins reports these results: A Bracket – Johnson City first and Maine Endwell-Gorton second; B Bracket – Greene first and Maine Endwell-Condon second; C Bracket – Candor first and Union Endicott-Black second.

Sixteen teams competed from July 6 to July 18 in the 12U Tourney.

In C Bracket, Union Endicott Little League led in extra innings over second place Susquehanna Valley with third to Newark Valley Youth Baseball.

IN B Bracket, first place went to Mark Twain Little League-Elmira, who competed against second place West Elmira Little League. Host Owego Little League came in third.

OLL’s two tournaments switched dates for the first time since 1995 – 12U first two weeks of July and 10U second two weeks – out of respect to tournament dates in other communities. Managers signed up for the tournament gave OLL a positive reaction.

One major problem developed for the second week of the 12U double elimination tournament. Umpires from the Endicott Umpires Association were not available for Sunday games. Thus the finals would not be played until Aug. 5 – now interfering with youth football.

So OLL changed to a single elimination tournament for the last week. Play was completed on Friday, July 31.

Here’s a question to the OLL Family. What action has to be taken in the months ahead to restore the Volunteer Umpire Program? Consider using Decision Analysis to identify the problem, assess important aspects of your decision, and prescribe a recommended course of action.
