Campville Fire officials reported that at approximately 3 p.m. on July 7, responders were toned out for a structure fire on Route 38, north of the Public Safety Building in Owego.
According to officials, the weather was very hot and humid with no breeze. The building involved was an older style, singlewide mobile home.
Engine 302, responding out of temporary quarters at the Public Safety Building with a crew of four, was on the scene within three minutes of the initial dispatch, according to officials.
It was determined all occupants and pets were out of the building and an immediate attack was initiated with a 1 and 3/4″ hand line. Also responding were Rescue Engine 303 and Quint 301 from Station 1, and Engine 304 from Station 2 along with Ambulance 332.
There were approximately 25 firefighters on the scene, which included Fire Police and EMS.
The fire in the ceiling was rapidly extinguished and there was no fire spread from the area of origin. As firefighters are aware, flames very rapidly consume older mobile homes. Officials stated that they were very fortunate to stop this event in its tracks. A few minutes more and the damage could have been much more severe.
Their plan, if needed, was to follow up the attack line with a second line and establish a tanker water supply. Those steps were in formation when they realized the fire was under control.
