Actual voters are the minority

Dear Editor,

In our democratic system we get to vote on the expenditure of public money or for the election of candidates for public office. The votes are counted and the will of the majority is enacted.

In order for the system to work, as it should, all or nearly all of the eligible voters should vote. When that does not happen and only those who do vote are counted; then the “majority” may really be only a minority. Still, the vote’s cast are the ones that can be counted and will determine the outcome.

I suggest that prior to any vote that the number of eligible voters be publicized. Then after the vote this number, as well as the number of Yes votes and the number of No votes be reported.

Then anyone may use those three figures to determine whatever percentages they wish.

Sincerely,

Karl Tiemann
