Horticulture Competition at the Tioga County Fair

For the first time in many years, there will be a horticulture competition at the Tioga County Fair. The competition centers around flowering annuals in portable containers or planters.

For adults, there will be a traditional planter competition as well as a crazy container garden, where anything from an old boot to a flour sack counts as a crazy container.

For children, there will also be a traditional planter and crazy container competition, as well as a fairy or superhero landscape competition. For the fairy or superhero competition, kids will make gardens that feature plants and a small scene with either a fairy or a superhero. Grandparents, this would be a fun project to work on together with your grandkids, now that they are out of school.  Pass on the love of gardening in this fun competition.

The planters should be delivered to the Fair on Monday, July 6, and the judging will take place July 7. There are prizes for each competition.

Stop by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Tioga offices at 56 Main St. in Owego, N.Y. to pick up an official premium book with the rules for the judging.  Help celebrate the return of horticulture and flowers to the Fair!
