Henson Contracting handling jobs big or small

While some people may be handy do-it-yourselfers, some jobs are too big, too complicated, or too time consuming to take on. That’s where the general contractor comes in, and for a good one no job is too big or too small. In Owego, a general contractor has been doing some very public work at 576 East Front St.

You can find John M. Henson Contracting and John M. Henson working on the much publicized house raising there. Homeowners sometimes worry that the contractor won’t do the job correctly, or may leave before the job is finished, and have heard horror stories about that happening to friends and family. If you’re thinking of having some work done on your home, you can see Henson’s work, and even drop by to speak with him.

Henson does all types of construction, from kitchen remodeling to commercial construction; building timber framed homes and log cabins. “I’m always looking for a challenge,” Henson said.

One thing some homeowner might not think about is their utility pipes. While working on the 576 Front St. project, Henson found that the water pipes leading into the home had several leaks. “Homeowners are responsible for the water and sewer pipes from the street to their home,” Henson said. If it’s been a long time since those pipes were looked at, it might be a good idea to have them checked for leaks, Henson said.

Henson has several jobs lined up after work is finished on East Front Street. He’s doing a couple additions, installing new windows in another house, and tries to keep busy year around. He’s been working as a contractor since 1986, and said he enjoys the work.

As a general contractor, Henson also has several sub-contractors he’s worked with for many years, like Vought Construction in Waverly for concrete work. Working with him in Owego are Sam Millard who did the plumbing and heating work, and Ken Callier who is doing the masonry. Henson credits Callier with suggesting bricks to cover the outer walls on the East Front Street home, as well as expertly matching the bricks of the original chimney.

Henson said he likes to keep his purchases local when he’s working on a job. “I like to support the town I’m doing business in,” he said. In Owego he set up an account at Home Central. It helps him keep track of who is buying what, and gives a report on the cost as well Henson said. Henson has also rented tools from Tioga Tools on Glenmary Drive.
