Fatal fire claims four lives in Vestal

Fatal fire claims four lives in VestalA mother and her three children died during a fire in their home in Vestal on Thursday. Broome County fire investigators identified the family members on Thursday as 33-year-old Nicole Tarbox, her son, 13-year old Evyn, and her two daughters, 9-year-old Mya, and 3-year old Mariah.

A 911 call at 2:10 a.m. on Thursday alerted officials, and the Vestal Fire Department was dispatched to the home at 439 State Line Rd. in the Town of Vestal. Upon arrival, heavy fire had already engulfed the home.

Fifteen-year-old Shawn Tarbox Jr., another son, survived by jumping from a second story window and reported the fire. Officials said he was alerted to the fire by smoke and an active fire alarm.

Investigators reported that the fire started in the kitchen near the stairway, trapping the fire victims.

Several area fire departments assisted the Vestal Fire department at the scene. Members of the Broome County Bureau of Fire Investigation, Vestal Police and the Broome County Coroners Office, assisted by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control are conducting the fire investigation.

None of the responders were injured.

The home is destroyed and was rented to the Tarbox family.
