Mark Wilson McCormack.

After a 10-year battle with colon cancer, Mark McCormack passed away on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 at age 55 in Herndon, Va. Mark is survived by his wife of 17 years, Judith Elert McCormack.

Formerly from Owego, Mark also leaves his sister Susan Pike (Lawrence), and nieces Lauren Kirkman (Robin) and their children, and Sarah Pike. Mark is further survived by mother-in-law Karyn Elert, sister-in-law Jennifer Elert Kern (Michael), and their children Grace, Caroline and Andrew; brother-in-law Ric Elert (Lisa), and their children Amanda, Julia, Joseph and Molly; and nephew George McCormack (Kristen) and their children. Mark was predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Thomas McCormack, and his older brother Thomas McCormack, Jr.

His Siberian Husky, best friend Penzey, also survives Mark.

Growing up in Owego, N.Y., and graduating from Ithaca College, Mark carried his fondness for certain New York teams with him throughout his years in Virginia (Yankees and Giants in particular). Via marriage, Mark became a reluctant Green Bay Packers fan.

Before his early medical retirement, Mark worked in the Fairfax County School system – specifically at Stone Middle School in Centreville, Va. Amongst many interests has been his involvement with the Herndon Rotary Club, Pet Harbor Siberian Husky Rescue, and the Fairfax Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT).

An avid racing cyclist in his earlier years, Mark also enjoyed water skiing and hockey, fantasy baseball and NASCAR.

A memorial service is planned for Monday, April 20, 2015 in Herndon with another to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his wife’s extended family and friends.
