OLL News Brief

Baseball drafts are Monday and Tuesday, March 23 and 24 for Owego Little League (OLL). Player Agent Eric Hawkins at ehawkins1@stny.rr.com says players will receive a call from their coach sometime that week letting them know the date of their first practice.

Dave York, vice president of baseball, will coordinate the Girls Softball draft.

Practice should start the week of March 30. This will be determined by field conditions after this harsh winter.

Opening Day 2015 will be Saturday, April 25 – one week earlier than past years. Check for updates on the OLL website at www.etamz.com/owego.

OLL relies on devoted volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly. League officers are always looking for responsible and enthusiastic individuals for support. Volunteers should have a keen interest in the safety, wellbeing and overall development of children. Let your wishes be known to become a volunteer. Whatever talents or skills you have, OLL can use them. OLL volunteers are grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, retires, community leaders, former Little Leaguers, friends, neighbors and more.

All parents of children playing in OLL are strongly encouraged to volunteer. As a parent, volunteer, you have the opportunity to spend quality time with your child in a safe, fun-filled environment.

Oftentimes parent and child social lives parallel each other. Volunteering allows your life and your child’s life to intersect on common ground, with shared interests and goals.

No experience is necessary to become a volunteer. Most of the volunteer opportunities require little or no training. OLL will provide you with the necessary training as well as support and encouragement. The best volunteers are those who are able to bring added enjoyment to the game simply by being themselves. What you see during Little League games is a mere fraction of what you can do as a volunteer.

Volunteer to help coaches and managers. Help in the concession stand. Help with field maintenance. Help keep Hyde Park trash free. Help empty field and dugout trash container after games and practices.

On Saturday players attended the Indoor Clinic in their age group at Owego Apalachin Middle School. Baseball players age seven to nine went to the morning sessions and players age 10 to 12 spent two hours in early afternoon classes. Managers and coaches gauged each player’s level of baseball.
