Apalachin violinists Miranda and Sophia Werner will be holding a recital on Saturday, March 28, at 7 p.m. at the Kilmer Mansion on Riverside Drive in Binghamton. The recital is open to the public.

The program will include music that spans not only a wide time-period, the 1700‘s to early 1900‘s, but also varied styles, including Baroque and Gypsy-inspired pieces.  Pieces include the refined Adagio and Presto from the Bach Sonata in G minor, Monti’s energetic “Czardas,” Sarasate’s “Ziguenerweisen” (also referred to as “Gypsy Airs”), and three movements of Lalo’s fiery “Symphonie Espagnole.”

For a trio, the girls will be joined by their teacher, Linda Case, of Ithaca, former Professor of Violin at Ithaca College and current concertmistress of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra. The remaining pieces include a Mozart duet and movements of two de Bériot violin concertos, written during the early Romantic period.

The sisters, members of the Binghamton Youth Symphony, have been studying violin since they were seven and five years old, respectively, and have been performing together at local fundraisers and public venues for several years.

According to Miranda, having two musicians in the house “makes it easier to play duets whenever we want. “I’m always listening to another person practice – it helps me improve my own playing.”

Regarding performing, Sophia says that she “enjoys performing because the audience enjoys it.” Sophia’s especially excited to play “Czardas” because “it reflects my personality because it has many different moods and tempos.” She says it’s a combination of sad, hopeful, happy, and sometimes even fierce.

The violinists will be joined by Pej Reitz on piano. The recital is free, with donations accepted to further the performers’ music education.
