OLL News Brief

Registrations are required to play Owego Little League (OLL) Baseball and Tee Ball and Girls Softball and Teener Baseball League during the 2015 season.

Sign Up now for the Owego Baseball Winter Clinic run by Owego Free Academy (OFA) Baseball Coaches and Staff and Varsity Baseball Players. Apalachin Little League players are invited and are asked to sign up.

The tool is the OLL website, www.eteamz.com/owego. If you need help, email OLL Player Agent Eric Hawkins ehawkins1@stny.rr.com.

A Little League International change this year: Four year olds may play Tee Ball. New age date for sign up is Jan. 1.

OLL VP Teener League Jim Lavo and VP Baseball Chris Rieg encourage all players 14 and under to be at the clinic from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. There will be various stations set up in both the Owego Free Academy High School and Owego Apalachin Middle School gymnasiums.

Themes of the clinic are philosophies and fundamentals taught by Owego Free Academy Head Baseball Coach Phil Schofield and his staff in their baseball program from modified to varsity.

Schofield stated, “My coaching staff will be working the event along with my varsity baseball players. We will be working on throwing fundamentals (infield, outfield, pitchers, and catchers), fielding fundamentals, and of course hitting fundamentals. I want to make sure the kids who signed up get to every station and learn all positions. This is a big step for these kids to learn important skills of the game and prepare for the next level of baseball.”

Parents and coaches are invited to observe what and how the players are being instructed. Parent observation is very important to learn tips on how to help their child. New and experienced coaches learn valuable techniques on how to instruct a team.

Owego Girls Softball players ages seven through 12 have completed five of six clinics on Feb. 2, 5, 9, 12 and 19 to prepare for the 2015 season.

There will be a Thursday, Feb. 26, clinic held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Owego Apalachin Middle School and OFA High School gyms.

On Wednesday, March 11, there will be a mandatory coaches meeting at the Ronald E. Dougherty County Office Building at 56 Main St. in Owego for all interested in coaching.

On Saturday, March 21, an indoor clinic precedes the annual Player Drafts.

Each team needs an experienced manager. Good coaches are needed to assist team managers. If you love the game and want to help, coaching opportunities exist.

The fields constantly need work to provide our kids a safe and fun environment to play. Volunteer for ground maintenance.

There are plenty of ways to assist not mentioned here. Offer your assistance by contacting an OLL officer, and by visiting www.eteamz.com/owego.
