Third annual Sportsman Day to take place in Spencer

Charles Alsheimer, pictured, will speak about his wildlife photography and the research he has done on the whitetail deer over many years during the annual Sportsman Day planned for Feb. 7 in Spencer.

On Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Spencer-Van Etten Sportsman Club will host its third annual Sportsman Day at the Spencer-Van Etten High School on Darts Crossroads in Spencer. If you liked it last year, you’ll love it this year! They have many new exhibits as well as most returning from last year.

After the show, and at approximately 7 p.m., Charles Alsheimer will speak about his wildlife photography and the research he has done on the whitetail deer over many years. Alsheimer is revered as a whitetail deer consultant, an outdoors writer for most all of the popular hunting magazines, and award winning photography.

Tickets are limited and are $5 for adults and $2 for students.

From hunting with dogs to hunting with guides, artists, taxidermists, wood carvers, archery shops, fishing experts and guides, an archery range and fly-casting area for kids, meat processors with free venison samples, a saw mill, outdoor furnaces, the National Guard, and the U.S. Army will all be on-hand.

Bring and display your mounts and have your rack scored by certified scorers. Learn how to prepare a hide for market from trap to sale. Learn how to throw an atlatl.

The Luckey Buck is also back, the biggest typical buck taken in New York ever, as well as the Ross Park Zoo who will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also, at 1:30 p.m., the Raptors of Cornell will be swooping into the main auditorium for an awesome show.

There will be a youth 3d archery tournament from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., bring your own gear.

Food and drinks will be available for sale, and the admission is free, as well as booth space.

Some new exhibitors this year will be The New Field and Stream store in Big Flats and Power and Paddle of Candor.
