Boy Scout Troop 38 held an Eagle Scout ceremony for Bernard Scheuerman and Garrett Fahey at First Presbyterian Union Church, which has chartered Troop 38 for over 75 years.

Reverend Parrish Bridges led the invocation with John Metzner and Dr. Terry Hills presenting the Eagle badge. Many troop leaders were involved in the ceremony including Bernard’s cousins who are also Eagle Scouts.

Bernard Scheuerman’s Eagle project was to landscape the green space and cemetery of First Presbyterian Union Church and build two benches for use in the cemetery. The space had become overgrown and in need of some attention and the church had been hopeful for many years to have a youth take on the revitalization and beautifying of this space.

Bernard wanted to improve an area of Owego as part of the revitalization effort to recover from the damage caused during the flood of 2011. A special thank you to Tim Sayers and Anthony Capri for all their guidance throughout the project, as well as the following who donated to this project: Tom Ash Insurance, Home Central, Got Mulch, Owego Elks, Kevin Tuttle and Joe Schreider.

Bernard started scouts as a wolf with Pack 37 and earned his Arrow of Light.  He joined Troop 38 and took his first trip to the Adirondacks. After moving to England he joined the First Warsash Sea Scouts. He continued to camp and learned how to sail. He attended international Jamborees including one at Windsor Castle.  Being in England he was also a member of the Lone Scout Program through the Transatlantic Council.

When Bernard returned to the states, he rejoined Boy Scout Troop 38 where he served as Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Troop Guide. Through Scouts he has traveled to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden in 2011, the National Scouting Jamboree in 2013 in West Virginia, and has served as Crew Leader during the high adventure troop trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He has worked at Camp Barton on the waterfront teaching sailing and serving as a lifeguard.

Bernard has been active in sports including freshman basketball, indoor track, soccer and baseball. He is the son of Raymond and Ann Scheuerman of Apalachin, N.Y. and will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology to study Biomedical Engineering.

Garrett Fahey’s Eagle project was to landscape the entrance to the Tioga County Boy’s and Girl’s Club in Owego. He planned the garden with the guidance of master gardener Jamy Howard of East of the Sun West of the Moon.

He would like to thank the numerous Owego businesses and residents who donated to this project to include W&W Nursery and Tioga Gardens for the trees and plants, and Wagner Lumber for the mulch. Thank you to Mark Felice for introducing him to this project idea and the hours he spent working on the garden. It took over 160 hours of volunteer effort by scouts, friends, and the community to complete this project.

Garrett started scouting as a tiger cub with Pack 413 in Maryland and earned his Arrow of Light. He joined Troop 38 as a Boy Scout. Garrett has served as an assistant Senior Patrol Leader and a Patrol Leader. He has attended Boy Scout Camp Barton each summer and was a Counselor in Training as a lifeguard at the waterfront. Garrett enjoyed biking, canoeing, and hiking with the troop.

He is active year round in varsity sports and participated in cross country running, swimming, track and football. He has also been active in the youth group at St. Patrick’s Church. Garrett has over 350 volunteer service hours during high school from Troop 38 and youth group. He is the son of Lawrence and Marilyn Fahey of Owego, N.Y. Garrett will be attending SUNY Fredonia to study Communications with a focus on Radio Broadcasting.

This Eagle Scout award could only be possible through the dedication of the youth and the support of many troop leaders. This combined with the many volunteer hours invested in helping boys becoming men through the creation of challenges that led to memories and lifelong experiences.  If you would like to join, Troop 38 meetings are held on Monday at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Union Church located at the corner of North Avenue and Temple Street in Owego.
