Readers’ Column for the week of Nov. 23, 2014

Lies, lies, and more lies! The Nobama regime would have the mainstream media try to make you believe that Ronald Reagan used executive orders to allow 3.1 million illegal aliens into this country during his term in office. He did not. He introduced the idea to Congress, who debated and wrote a law allowing this to happen. Known as the Simpson-Mazzoli Act, Reagan signed the law. He DID NOT use executive privilege to accomplish this, unlike the walking disaster currently in the Oval Office. I have read the budget Paul Ryan hopes to propose. The mainstream media and the liberals would like to have you believe it cuts Social Security, Medicare, school lunches, tosses grandma out of her home, etc. It does NONE of these things, NONE! It does cut out unnecessary, feel good, accomplish nothing giveaways that the liberals specialize in, like free cell phones, financial aid to the arts, etc. Result, huge savings, balanced budget in three to five years. The liberals can’t seem to not lie about everything and anything; but only the low information voters are falling for it.

If we want to retain senior citizens in our communities, we need to promote healthy aging and age-friendly communities. One of the priorities of the New York Academy of Medicine is Promoting Healthy Aging. To do this we need age-friendly policies and programs. With the projected closing of Tioga County’s Public Transit at the end of November 2014, seniors will have less options for transportation. Are other citizens in our Tioga County Community interested in working on making our community more age friendly?

“The Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan estimated that between $31 billion and $60 billion was lost to waste and fraud during U.S. operations in those countries. The Justice Department says it brought 237 criminal cases from November 2005 to September 2014 arising from war-zone misconduct – often contracting and procurement fraud.” “Prosecutors Troubled by Extent of Military Fraud” — Eric Tucker AP

Every year about this time YeOlde Country Florist runs an ad in the Pennysaver about an Open House, free calendar, and rose with the ad. Well last year I put my name in for the door prize and they called me at the end of the day saying I had won first prize of a bouquet every month for one year. I was delighted and even more so with the service they gave me each month when I went in to claim a new bouquet. The clerk Marge always greeted me with a big smile and choice of anything up to $35. I have been so blessed by them and their service, so I just wanted to let the village know how special they were to me and you all best go put your name in this year and get your calendar and rose. Thank you Ye Olde Country Florist for treating me so special. God bless you all.

This week, just as a man went to shake my hand, he winked at me. Can anyone tell me what this means. I was very troubled by the incident. I have never known how to react to people that wink. Thank you.

So, your president still today puts out his opinion on the pipeline. Pretty bad when the governor of Louisiana is completely 180 degrees out of phase with her own party’s president, and in this case, she is right on. Jobs. Money. Happy people. Not, “Oh, well, we have to make sure that we don’t increase “Greenhouse gasses” over this notion of more jobs and progress”. My opinion? If the Democrats and all of their elected stooges that want to put the U.S.A. right out of business would refrain from passing their partisan “gasses” for two years, it would do far more good for the environment than any of their hair-brained schemes about global warming will ever produce. For Pete’s sake, we’ve got volcanoes, wars in the Middle Eastern world blowing up and burning everything in site, forest-burning in the tropics, forest fires in the U.S., China building coal power plants like Hershey’s makes kisses, and WE have to give up every form of industry here because of some foolish concern over greenhouse gasses? Beam me up, Scotty.

Great job on my pants that you hemmed for me, Jean! Call Jean at 687-2069 for sewing needs. She has reasonable prices and her work looks good to me.

~

Tried the new River Rock Diner in Owego on 17C. The place was spotless, the food was really good, the prices were reasonable and the wait staff was efficient and friendly. Would definitely recommend for breakfast or lunch.

I feel sad that you who deny climate change think 97 percent of climate scientists are wrong and that you get your education from Fox News instead of peer-reviewed science. I feel sad that you believe the corporate ads and the legislators bought by unrelenting corporate greed. I feel sad that you vote for legislators who are cozy with industries that will take away your property rights, while you think they’re being taken by some left-wing U.N. conspiracy. Please, I ask you to wake up, turn off Fox News, get educated and stand with those who are fighting for clean air, water, land and a future. There are no royalties on a dead planet

~

I would just like to say we have been to the new River Rock Diner a few times now and how pleasant of a place it is. The owner took the time out of the kitchen to come and see if everything was good and asked our opinion on everything. Made us feel very welcome and our thoughts mattered. The food was great and definitely filling. Welcome to Owego and we look forward to eating there often.

~

This is to the person who stole the tree stand and ladder off of private property on State Line Road in Nichols. Maybe you should have taken the trail camera as well. We have several pictures of you taking the stand and ladder on private property. I just want you to know that if you don’t return it ASAP, you will be prosecuted for trespassing and theft of the property.

On the website for the Village of Owego, the last meeting minutes were dated Jan. 3, 2013. Is there some reason for that?

~

As I predicted the great deceiver and divider, Obama, has an illegal alien plan ready to go right after the elections. If he decides to unilaterally grant amnesty next week I hope the republicans see this as an act of dictatorial war and act appropriately and intelligently to stop Obama’s unconstitutional actions.

~

I don’t understand all the little towns and villages around us are bringing on more police to their police force except Owego who thinks they need fewer. I wonder why that is?

~

This is for adult children. Do you know where your parents lived when they were born? Do you know how your parents met? Do you know that they did for fun as children? Do you know what dreams they had? I didn’t think so. Visit with them and actually talk with them and know them. Enjoy and do things with them while they are still able.

~

When is Tioga County going to start building something for middle-income senior citizens? It’s needed now, something like Castle Gardens would be a blessing.

~

Another American is beheaded by Isis and their leader Baghdadi calls Obama a weak and indecisive loser. That is painfully obvious. Obama has authorized up to 7 bombers strikes per day against Isis. We should unleash Armageddon on Isis including any and all weapons in the U.S. arsenal.

~

I would personally like to thank the Tioga Rural Ministry for the food baskets and the food they’ve helped me with through the year. You make my holidays a little easier and a little bit easier on my budget. May you have a blessed Christmas!

~

Conspiracy theories about climate change are better understood if one has his pointy tin or aluminum dunce cap on properly. Perhaps it’s time for a change. You might want to switch to an aluminum foil dunce cap to get a better grip on things including your conspiracy theories.

~

This is just sort of a heads up. The prices you pay for gas right now, they’re going to sky rocket now that the republicans hold both houses of congress, you’re going to be paying $4 a gallon for gas and probably more! Just wait and see.

I lost a diamond earring Friday night on Front Street between Ross Street and Church Street. If found please call 727-1223, reward available.

~

I just want people to understand that all these people are spending our money and we will pay more taxes all around like a garage or Candor town barn or something. I don’t buy everything new, if something goes wrong I fix it. Fix the building, put a roof on it. It’s a town barn! Why do they need a new school for a diminishing population? It’s a bunch of bull!

~

Fox news is on another rampage. They want another government shut down. The chaos created in the last government shut down wasn’t enough for them. One out of every five children in the Southern Tier goes hungry. One out of every 20 children in the United States is homeless. This is a result of a government shut down. Oh yes, we still have the Paul Ryan budget cuts coming. They’ll show the middle class and poor people what life is all about. Republicans, what losers!

~

I think the Town of Richford is lucky to have Doug Wendell as a town employee. His is a good honest person who does his job well.

~

I have a lot of fabric to give away. I have several bolts, lots of material, lots of yardage. There are flannels, fleeces and regular material. If anyone is interested to have it to quilt or to sew with please leave your name in the paper and I will contact you.

~

I live in Warren Center, Pa. and I was wondering if there was anybody nearby who could put a new zipper in a jacket of mine. I’d appreciate if anyone knows of anybody, if they could leave their name in this column.

~

Just to let you know, there will be free bowling, free pizza, and free soda at Owego Bowl on Black Friday, Nov. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. for all school age children. Hope to see a lot of people there!

~

I live in Candor up on a hill looking out towards Spencer, the view is beautiful. When I moved here 25 years ago it was pristine. Now I look out and there’s a tower that was put up a few years ago and the sunset is behind the tower now, which breaks my heart every time I see it. Just last month there’s another tower, so now I have two towers in my view. How long is it going to be before I look at 5, 6 or 7 towers? What are these towers for? It just blows my mind! I don’t want to look at towers, I want to look at nature.

~

To the people of the Village of Owego, we need to wake up and start going to the village meetings and keep complaining about the high sewer tax rate. It is unbelievable mine went up 400 percent!

~

I keep calling and calling about HEAP because I want to know if I will be getting it this year and all I keep getting is a recording that all lines are busy and goodbye. I would like to know why because I want to get a hold of someone there so I will know.

~

I’d just like to say what a fabulous job was done on the Flemingville Bridge this year and also if you are heading down West Creek Road towards Flemingville, the west creek side has lowered the speed limit to 40 mph which is a new thing that people are not aware of. There is not a pre-speed limit sign to let you know it’s not 55 mph anymore. I think people need to be aware and slow down.

Being especially interested in local history, and it doesn’t get anymore historical than the stately Glenmary Inn, is their anyone out there aware of any book’s ever being written about the Glenmary Inn and it’s history? If so, please respond by email to me at mschmeyer@yahoo.com.

This is in regards to last week’s comment about the Fire Station that is being forced upon us. Well said! My husband and I are seriously considering moving out of Owego, in fact out of New York state, because quite simply we can no longer afford to live here. The taxes are absolutely raping the citizens here. So very fed up with these politicians ramming everything down our throats. A 22 percent increase is outrageous. Then we have the new school, with all its “bells and whistles” as someone else said. Its just sickening how these people spend our tax dollars. Schools used to be for learning, apparently not any more; let’s see who can build the best looking and luxurious one. Coolest Small Town? I hardly think so. Owego will be a ghost town if they keep things like this up. Look around people and see how many homes are up for sale, soon there will be one more.

~

What is our community doing to prepare for our next flood? How are we making our community more resistant to flooding and better able to adapt? The time to discuss this and prepare is now, not after the next flood.

~

Ride Tioga is shutting down Nov. 28. I think we should make the county legislators try to keep it going and to look at all resources in the county to help try to subsidize it somewhat. What part does the IDA play in it, or could play in it to make it stay alive. If you look back at history, in 25 years the schedule has never been changed and the fare has never been changed to help subsidize it. And why would a county employee recommend to the legislators $1,336 million compared to the previous contractor, which was $953,000? The old saying is figures don’t lie and liars don’t figure. Why would buy a Cadillac when you have enough money for a Volkswagen. Why would you recommend something that you knew you could not afford? A lot of people should take a look at this.

~

Now that the area that the Owego Fire Department (OFD) will cover is decreased, I hope that the OFD and the village board will look at downsizing the number of stations and equipment needed to cover a smaller area.

See how good and bad local School Districts can be. Compare the New York State Comptroller’s October Audit report of the Spencer Van Etten School District with the New York State Comptrollers August Audit report on the OACSD. OACSD is on a statutory mandated Corrective Action Plan to correct its fraudulent budgeting practices! Spencer Van Etten is praised for stewardship of the public trust. The only way we can save our students and prevent our reduction to tax serfs is to dissolve the OACSD and parcel it out to surrounding Districts. No District will merge with us due to the excessive liabilities of our union contracts.
