Traditions at the Glen has announced that beginning Wednesday Nov. 19, sufferers of COPD will be able to receive free halotherapy sessions in honor of COPD Awareness Day. From the 19th through the 26th of November, COPD sufferers can enjoy free sessions for the week of a form of treatment offered locally by the Salt Sanctuary that has been most recently featured on ABC’s Good Morning America (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/salt-therapy-big-thing-pampering/story?id=25569918).

“This is one of the only facilities of its kind in the country. We custom built the Salt Sanctuary to bring halotherapy here to the Southern Tier. I first discovered it while overseas and after learning about all of its’ great affects on the human body and respiratory ailments, I knew this would be a great addition to the Spa as well as our region. COPD is one of the leading causes of death here in the United States and whatever we can do to help, especially during COPD Awareness Day, we want to do for our community,” commented Matt Walsh, partner in The Salt Sanctuary.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease that usually causes breathing to get worse over time. COPD includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. COPD also includes episodes called flare-ups (also known as exacerbations).

An estimated 15.9 percent (24,600) of adults in Broome County and 15 percent of adults in New York State have been diagnosed with asthma during their lifetime, according to a report by the NY Department of Health in 2009. Meanwhile, COPD has been called the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and its prevalence is increasing. The arrival of salt therapy to Upstate New York provides a natural form of relief to respiratory illnesses, and research supports this.

The Salt Sanctuary is located in The Spa, at Traditions at the Glen Resort and Conference Center in Johnson City, New York. Salt Sanctuary provides a new, natural form of relief to the large population of individuals in the region suffering from respiratory illnesses and uncomfortable skin conditions. Salt therapy is based on the sterile atmosphere and healing microclimate of natural salt caves of Eastern Europe. Studies in Europe and by the New England Journal of medicine indicate that salt therapy benefits asthmatics, cystic fibrosis patients, and a host of other respiratory and skin ailment sufferers. The Salt Sanctuary features a Himalayan salt cave and hyper-modern salt room. The cave is constructed with Himalayan salt and accommodates multiple guests. The salt room is designed with a hypnotizing wall of illuminated salt bricks and accommodates smaller groups and children. The atmosphere of the salt cave is an escape from the contaminated environments of daily life, free of allergens, pathogens, and pollutants. Any microorganisms that make their way inside do not survive.

Such a sterile atmosphere is ideal for healing, and sets the stage for therapeutic action of the salt particles and negative ions that are created when salt breaks down due to heat and moisture of airway linings. Microscopic salt particles enter the airways and reach down deep to the cellular level. At this level, particles stimulate airway linings, improve mucous clearance and enable a better immune response to pathogens. People with chronic respiratory conditions have been shown to lack sodium chloride in their airway linings, and this treatment helps resolve this deficiency.

Appointments for the free Salt Sanctuary sessions can be made by calling (607) 797-2381. Free seminars on halotherapy can also be made available to groups upon request. Salt Sanctuary is a part of the resort at Traditions at the Glen, located at 4101 Watson Boulevard in Johnson City, and is owned by the Walsh family.
