Tioga County High School athletics remain in the spotlight following sectional championship wins. Candor’s volleyball team fell to York in its bid to repeat as state champions at the NYSPHSAA Class D Volleyball Championship last Sunday, ending the season at 16-2; York finished at 22-1.
Things continue; however, as Owego football advances to the NYSPHSAA Final Four following a 36-34 win over New Hartford in the New York State Class B football semi-quarterfinals, a first ever for the River Hawks.
A late play by Owego’s Dylan Brace, and with only seconds left on the clock, secured the win for Owego when he nailed a field goal that put them on top. A video of this play can be viewed on The Owego Pennysaver Facebook page, as well as updates.
The River Hawks, now 9-3, will play undefeated Monroe in the Western Regional finals on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. in the state semifinals at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Tickets can be found at https://nysphsaa.org/, or you can find the link on The Owego Pennysaver Facebook Page.
For Tioga Central, a win over Section III champions Lovell in the quarterfinals of the New York State Class D football playoffs secured them a victory. Tioga, now 11-1, was expected to face the undefeated Section VI champions from Newfane on Friday, Nov. 28, at 3 p.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse High School in the state semifinals.
