Champion Speedway’s second program of the year got off under nice, clear blue skies for a change and with another nice turnout! Over 40 ATV entries and a solid speedway contingent were on the card.

Casey “Dominator” Donholt and Jeremy “Dark Horse” Parsons were the strongest in the heats with Donholt going perfect and Parsons only dropping a point to him.

Five-time track champion and week one winner, Adam “The Missile” Mittl, missed his first two heat races but got lucky as he won his last one which put him in a runoff with Alex “Hazard” Heath for the last spot in the Last Chance. Heath jumped out of the start and led Mittl for a lap before getting wide and surrendering. Mittl would go on to win the Last Chance convincingly over “Smokin” Dave Oakden, Spencer Portararo, and Jonny Okaden, in that order.

Donholt would come off the outside gate in the final and made no mistakes as he used the dirt line to get to the front from the line and rode a smooth, fast, four laps to take home the Summer Season kickoff. Parsons would take second and kept the gap close on Donholt on his Justice Bros, Oury Grip, Scotts Headers, Team Cobra GM. Owego’s own “Flyin” Brian Hollenbeck was a strong third, just ahead of Len McBride and Mittl.

Shane Smith, who is a favorite to win any night in the ATV action, scored another victory in the Quad Pro division with Robert Ulrich coming first place in the Sportsman and Bruce Stauder taking top honors in the AM class after a great, back and forth battle with Jimmer Ulrich.

One of the biggest race weekends of the season is coming up next as Champion’s sister track, Action Park East in Greene, N.Y. has re-opened after an eight year year hiatus and runs Friday night June 21, followed by the United States Open Speedway Grand Prix Series Round One at Champion June 22.

The Champion event is the first of a three race Grand Prix style formatted series featuring the top riders trying to qualify into the U.S. Open Championships Labor Day weekend. The event will honor Kevin Thrift, father of track staff member Richard Thrift, and will offer a much larger purse than normal plus a last man out challenge, which is put on by the Last of the Mohicans, two West Coast fans, that puts up additional purse money. Fans who bring their wristbands to the event from the night before at Action Park East, will receive a 3.00 discount.
