Jordana Suttmeier Scholarship Fund established in Candor

The Candor community is mourning the loss of a remarkable, beautiful, strong, resourceful citizen. Jordana Joy Suttmeier died at age 46 on Feb. 12, after a battle with cancer. ‘Jo’ was an avid animal lover and focused from a very young age on making sure her life’s work would involve horses.  

Jo earned an undergraduate degree from Cornell University in animal science and a master’s from the University of Vermont. She was particularly concerned with animal nutrition and worked hard to make sure that each individual horse stabled at her farm received the just the right amount of nutrients in their diet.  

Jo worked tirelessly for the Candor Bread of Life Food Pantry, collecting food from various vendors and delivering to the pantry. Jo was generous with her time. Her ‘riding lessons’ always extended well beyond the allotted time of an hour, teaching students the importance of not only taking care of the horse, but taking care of horse paraphernalia, and the barn.  

“If you are going to have a horse, you need to know how to take care of a horse,” was her credo.  Jo was an environmentalist before it became vogue, sincerely caring about the earth and all the creatures on it and the impact that humans have on them.

In an effort to keep Jo’s legacy of love of animals and their welfare, her spirit of generosity, altruism, and environmentalism alive, the Candor Community has established a scholarship in Jo’s name. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is determined to pursue a career in an animal science or an environmental science field and who has demonstrated a sincere effort to achieve their best both morally and academically.
