Hat’s Off to the Women’s Suffrage Committee

Hat’s Off to the Women’s Suffrage CommitteeThe Tioga County Women’s Suffrage Committee is asking everyone to wear a hat all day on Nov. 6, 2017 to remind everyone that here, in Tioga County, women appreciate the right to vote.

One hundred years ago, on Nov. 6, 1917, a vote was passed that allowed the women in New York State to vote for the first time in history, three years before the rest of the country.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, events with a suffrage theme have taken place in each of our towns. Parades were held, buntings were hung, walks were taken, speeches and talks were presented, dignitaries stopped by and our Tioga County Courthouse was open for tours for the first time in years, and so much more.

Now that it is almost time to close the 2017 centennial activities, the Tioga County Women’s Suffrage Committee is asking you to do one more thing to show your respect to the women who led the area to winning the vote on Nov. 6, 1917.

The request is simple and fun; wear a hat all day on Nov. 6. It doesn’t have to be an authentic hat, it can be any style you choose and when anyone asks why you are wearing a hat all day, you can tip it and say, “It’s our way of saying “Hat’s Off” to Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and all the other Suffragists, including male sympathizers who fought so hard to give women the right to vote.”
