On July 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a Silk Ribbon Embroidery workshop with Mercia Stocking will take place at the Bement Billings Farmstead in Newark Valley.
Silk ribbon embroidery has been around for a very long time and first became popular during the French rococo period 1750 – 1780. The ribbon embroidery was very popular at court.
Ball gowns, capes as well as men’s hosiery were commissioned to official embroidery houses. The privilege of wearing the fine gowns was reserved for the French court. It became fashionable at the English court with the addition of rucking, rosettes and ribbon work, not only on gowns but bonnets as well.
As the product became more accessible its popularity spread and became available to all. And from the 1820’s to World War I, ribbon embroidery became popular on men’s waistcoats.
This very beautiful embroidery work has spread around the world and remains popular in Russia, Australia, South Africa, the U.S.A. and Canada. And it’s not only for decorating garments, but samplers, crazy quilts, home decor and more. Some previous embroidery experience is helpful.
The cost of the workshop is $25 for Newark Valley Historical members, and $30 for non-members. Some scholarships are available.
Participants will embroider a floral motif, and materials will be provided. Bring an 8-inch embroidery hoop and sharp scissors.
Participants will see many fine samples, and will learn about historic uses dating back to the 1500’s. Mercia hails from South Africa and is experienced in many fine crafts.
Register for the workshop by calling Leslie at 642-5412 by July 14. For more information, visit nvhistory.org or email to nvhistory@stny.rr.com.
