Readers’ Column for the week of Feb. 28, 2016

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

I see there are options for the upcoming village election. Can someone please tell me which, if any, of the new party members will be addressing the unfair abhorrent sewer charges the current administration has levied upon the village landlords and businesses, dealing a low blow to flood ravaged businesses just starting to get back on their feet? There has been nothing but false statements and unfulfilled promises to remedy the situation, and now well over a year later, still nothing has been done.

~

To the party who wrote in last week’s Pennysaver about luck being a great part of success today. Sorry, I couldn’t disagree with you more. You can guarantee equality of OPPORTUNITY, not Outcome! Hard work, perseverance, focus, determination – that’s what’s needed! If you think guarantee of OUTCOME is the way to go, then I fear you are apt to fall for the cool-aid as per Bernie Sanders and Hilary. There ain’t no free lunch! The government has no money, other than that which the take from others. Why would producers continue to produce and provide jobs if 90 percent of their income is confiscated by the government? Not going to happen! In the 60’s, government decided they would tax the American makers of luxury yachts to raise a bunch of cash. Customers still bought luxury yachts, they just bought them in the Philippines and elsewhere, putting thousands of American workers out of jobs. Government has no role is guaranteeing OUTCOME; government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. People can work and guarantee their own outcome based on their own efforts.

Way to go FB you lost your fundraisers.

Can someone tell me why JK and EJ control the FB?

501c3? Last year’s excuse was it’s tax time. What’s the hold up this year? I think someone is stalling this.

The DOT appears to have changed the light at Court and Main again. It is now legal to take a right on red. Cars and pickups can also turn right from North Avenue onto Main Street on the red light. It is frustrating when people sit at both these intersections and wait for the green light.

“Wanted, a reliable car for a 21-year old boy so he can get a job. Sometimes an older person stops driving and has to give up their car. Call (607) 687-5620. From a concerned grandmother.” I recommend contacting Donald L. Ulmer, age 72, of Little Meadows, Pa.. By court order Mr. Ulmer definitely fits your description of someone who needs to give up his car and never to drive again. And if not his car to sell, the person who had knowing knowledge and gave Mr. Ulmer access to driving a car, should be required to sell theirs and remove the threat that there will be a third death due to complicit stupidity.

An estimated 70 percent of antibiotics and related drugs produced in this country are used for non-therapeutic purposes such as accelerating animal growth and compensating for overcrowded and unsanitary conditions on factory farms. –Union of Concerned Scientists

Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump have upset the carefully orchestrated election plans of their respective parties. Hillary Clinton is being forced to shift her policy positions to the left in the primaries because of Sanders’ growing support. Her campaign had planned to present her as a centrist until she was nominated. Then she would shift to the right to shadow the Republican in the general election. This is how Hillary Clinton plays the game. It’s classic Clinton triangulation, and it’s totally dishonest.

~

Ya gotta love it. Hillary’s response to a reporter’s question if she’s always told the truth was one big attempt at escape, distraction, nervous nonsense, all the while she’s shaking her head from side- to- side clearly non-verbally communicating “no”. And this person thinks they are qualified to be President? Ya gotta be kidding!

~

To the beep beep news flash contributor. Seriously dude? So far no news flashes and the beep beep beep is just down right, well, annoying to keep it polite.

Let’s try to get a better grasp of the justice system. With no indictment, no trial, and no conviction there is no legal determination of criminality, a personal belief or that of an opinion group notwithstanding. Corollary: Thinking something should be illegal doesn’t make it illegal.

~

To the person who personally saw someone buy beer and cigarettes with food stamps – It may have been cash on a benefit card. You cannot buy beer or cigarettes with food stamps; it is against the law. Steak, as you stated, is food, and unfortunately, yes, some do buy an unhealthy diet. If you think this person is violating the law, or the store is, then report them. If you don’t like what people eat using food stamps, then write your congressman. If a person is single and alone, I do know that they pay the bills, but do not give cash, almost always. There is a work program that you are required to go to, and it is full time, while looking for work, which is also a requirement, and checked so, you do earn your benefits as if you had a job, only you have very little control over it, if any. I am sure that your local DSS can give you any information that you want before you make an uninformed statement. Not all people are using the system, or abusing it.

I’m calling in regard to VCR and DVD players. I’m very interested in one of them. If you could, call me at 625-5324.

Triangulation will be Hillary Clinton’s governing style. Here’s how it works: Big Money buys conservative seats in the House of Representatives to gain the majority. The conservative House blocks legislation it doesn’t want. Clinton as president cuts bad deals with Congress to get anything done. The Republicans are satisfied. Clinton calls them obstructionists, but her Big Money contributors get what they want. Big Money funds her re-election. Sound familiar? Pixie dust and promises are what we’ll get from Hillary Clinton. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so.

To the state road crews who did the “mowing” during January and February – what a mess you made. Why mow to clear for the rain when you did not clean up all the debris you created. The water cannot flow through the drainage ditches with all the branches clogging it up. The prisoners cleaned up all the trash for you. Why was there not a wood chipper behind your mower to dispose of the branches you cut back? Will you ever come back to clean this up? I sure hope so. It is an eye sore and a nightmare if we get the heavy rains they predict. — Concerned Citizen and taxpayer of Tioga County

To the irresponsible dog “owners” of the three dogs chained to trees on Candor Hill Road, you should not own dogs. You have been reported to the authorities. This is neglect. Water frozen in a dish is not a proper drink, nor is an un-insulated “house” with -20 temps. Go spend the night in there in your undies and see how warm you will be. If you cannot properly care for the dogs, give them up to someone who can. We don’t need to see any more dogs frozen to the ground this year. I hope you have a conscience and do the “right thing”. Signed: Pet lover and responsible owner.

I’d like to comment on the Town of Owego truck at the Quik Fill. He’s a foreman, I’m not going to say he’s a good one but we’ve never had a foreman with a pickup truck for 50 years. Between him and the other truck too, they both have fuel tanks but they have an awful time in the summer keeping equipment fueled up. Now you figure out the problem. Have a good one!

Why does the media keep pretending they don’t understand why so many people are going for Trump. The reason so many people are going for Trump is because the public is tired of this nation being run by lobbyists and he doesn’t owe money to any lobbyists. It’s simple, it’s easy and there’s no hidden reason. This country is tired of being run by politicians and those they are getting paid by.

Why don’t we use the existing social security system to track all non-citizens? I understand the government is having a hard time keeping track of non-citizens and non-documented workers. If we required all non-documented workers to register with the social security service in order to get paid for work and to receive health benefits they would pay taxes just like the rest of us and help pay their way through the civil services that they now get for free. No social security number, no work, no work, no pay. While we are at it, social security registration might automatically be used to enlist all non-citizens into a multiple year road into citizenship. It makes so much sense.

Recently Hillary says she has always “tried” not to lie. Tell that to the relatives of those who have died in Benghazi. Hillary has not had a press conference in nearly three months while Cruz, Rubio, and Trump are asked tough questions by the lame stream media almost every day. Think about it.

~

So you Marxists, socialist democrats really think Bernie has a chance and that Hillary does not have the nomination in the bag? You are fools! Hillary has the super delegates all lined up and you Bernie supporters are living in an alternative universe if you think Bernie has a chance. Democrat elites are playing you just like the Bush elites tried to play conservatives. Thankfully, the conservatives were smart enough to give Jeb the goodbye sign while the Bernie people are in la la land.

~

John Kerry’s last name should be spelled Kerry. Speaking of last names, I think a good last name for Hillary Clinton should be liar, liar, pants on fire.

~

I don’t know if it’s true or not but I have been told that on about March 14 New York State will start enforcing a new law that you can’t eat or drink any kind of beverage while you are driving your car in New York State. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this.

This is for the person who wants a neurologist. This doctor is Dr. Patel, 729-1521; he is by Wilson hospital in a big beige building on the second floor. I’m also interested in the VCR and DVD player that someone is giving away. Could you please give me a call at 205-1398. I would really like to have them because I record things for the VCR.

~

I’m looking for Connie Short, I’m an old friend of hers, Wilson Creek to Berkshire, please give me call 657-2847.

I’m calling to talk about the Town of Newark Valley property tax reports that came out. They came out four days late, you get penalized for having the full amount available even though they sent it out late we still have to pay for the interest on the property tax which I think is highly wrong. Do you know whom you can contact to take care of something like this? I feel if you have the money to pay it and don’t receive your bill until four days after the deadline, something should be done about that.

Does anyone where I might find affordable life insurance? By locally, I mean the Owego area. I am a senior, I would prefer whole life insurance but a good term policy would be considered. If anyone knows of an agent who could do this please respond in this column. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I was sure most all of us are aware by now that this is an important and busy election year. We have the village election and also many primaries plus the most important, the national election. Folks, please, if you have moved recently or have not voted in a while take a minute out of your day and call the board of elections to make sure their records are up to date and you are going to the correct polling spot. Not only will you save time, you will save the time of those in back of you in line. We will all appreciate it.

Ithaca Mayor Myrick supports a safe harbor for heroine addicts with medical supervision so they can “safely” shoot up, that is when he is not hosting a Hillary Clinton rally. That is what the socialist Marxist democrat party has become. If anyone is serious about the drug problem they should look to governments that have adopted tough love programs like Hong Kong. Drug dealers are executed and addicts go into long-term compulsory treatment programs. But don’t hold your breath waiting for liberals to consider effective treatment options.
