Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga Co. announces Community Foundation for South Central New York support

Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga Co., Inc. (LVBTC) is pleased to announce that the Community Foundation for South Central New York has recently awarded a grant of $15,000 to support the agency’s operations.

The Community Foundation’s investment ensures that LVBTC can continue to provide basic literacy education and English as a second language services to 95 adult students and 306 computer literacy students in Broome and Tioga Counties.

“We give adults literacy tools to succeed in life,” said Kristen Gordon-Pier, interim executive director of LVBTC. “For over 48 years, Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga has served adult learners at the lowest literacy levels. Many of these students have learning disabilities, very low or no income, physical health problems, and other challenges.”

Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga supports 75 volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring, small group instruction, and conduct math, English and reading labs at the Broome County Public Library. LVBTC helps adults improve their computer skills at their Tioga Adult Learning Lab (T.A.L.L.) in Owego.

“Our services are provided at no cost to students,” said Gordon-Pier. “LVBTC’s flexible instructional model allows our organization to provide curriculum and activities to meet each student’s educational, employment and personal goals.”
