Look at the bigger picture

Dear Editor,

In the Mayor’s Village of Owego report, he stated there were 18 property buyouts amounting to about $6,000 in taxes. He seems to think this isn’t very much money lost. But when you look at the overall picture, it’s different.

The sewer bill from these buyouts will be added to the rest of the Village resident bills. DPW will have to maintain, cut grass, clean sidewalks, etc., on these properties. These 18 families won’t be spending money in the Village or count towards getting state or federal aid.

The Police Department, DPW, and Sewer Department are getting bigger, while the rest of the Village is getting smaller. It is time for a change.

Sincerely,

Jim Legursky
